rice and salt
    #373546 - 08/17/01 06:06 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

ppl put normal cookign rice into salt shakers to stop mositure causing the salt to expand so it is to big to fit thru the holes. The dry rice attracts and absorbs the mositure.

Would storing mushrooms in jars with rice, help them to stay preserved for longer, than just putting dried mushrooms in a jar.

An interesting idea, Wilde, and I sometimes use rice to keep fresh shroomies until there is room in my dessicant chamber - but nowdays i just use plain salt as a dessicant when i get desperate for room...

I've heard that some people put their shrooms on top of rice and then put a fan on it to dry them...

I've used both rock salt and rice in drying experiments, and I've found that rock salt works better. It's a good idea to store your shrooms with rice to absorb whatever moisture is left over, but that's assuming the shrooms are already dried when you store them away.

I lay out a bottom layer of rice and then bury my shrooms under about a 1/4" of rice and put a fan and a desk lamp on them. They are usually totally dried out after a day and a half. I am too lazy and cheap to go buy dessicant. After the are dry and hard, I store them in a jar with rice in it like the salt shakers. I've been meaning to go get dry ice to store them in CO2.
