Eason Jordan
    #3734298 - 02/05/05 07:18 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Am I the only one here who has been following the Eason Jordan scandal? Jordan is the head of CNN news services. He's the same guy who admitted to covering up Hussein's atrocities and assassination plots in order to keep CNN's "in" to the regime.

The scandal to which I refer is his rambling speech at the recent economic conference in Davos, Switzerland, where he accused -- in front of an international audience and a US senator -- the US of deliberately targetting journalists. In previous statements he has accused them of not just shooting journalists deliberately, but also of torturing them.

Anyone else following this?

With the advent of the new suporter forums, it seemed wise to distance my real world persona from The Shroomery. Think of it as a New Year's resolution if you want.

I predict this will be huge... on the order of the Rathergate scandal or perhaps even larger.

What is interesting about this is that -- if Jordan's accusations are true -- it makes Abu Ghraib look like small potatoes. But the fact of the mattter is that his charges aren't true. Eason Jordan is revealing his true colors but the MSM (mainstream media) won't touch it because if they do their true agenda will be revealed for all the world to see. They're circling the wagons by refusing to touch this story. Unfortunately for them, the blogosphere has their teeth sunk firmly into it and it will eventually break into the open,

And when it does it will be uber bad for the MSM. This is just too big for them to sweep under the rug.

http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/ has been all over this for a few days. The blogosphere is once again outing the Mainstream media. The days of "professional" journalists controlling the information we get is over.

This is from the site zappaisgod linked to, dated february 2nd:
-----

Carol Platt Liebau has Eason Jordan's official response, which she got by working through mutual acquaintances. Jordan maintains that he never said that the US deliberately targeted journalists:

"To be clear, I do not believe the U.S. military is trying to kill journalists in Iraq. I said so during the forum panel discussion. But, nonetheless, the U.S. military has killed several journalists in Iraq in cases of mistaken identity. The reason the word "targeted" came up at all is because I was responding to a comment by Congressman Franks, who said he believed the 63 journalists killed in Iraq were the victims of "collateral damage." Since three of my CNN colleagues and many other journalists have been killed on purpose in Iraq, I disputed the "collateral damage" statement, saying, unfortunately, many journalists -- not all -- killed in Iraq were indeed targeted. When someone aims a gun at someone and pulls the trigger and then learns later the person fired at was actually a journalist, an apology is appropriate and is accepted, and I believe those apologies to be genuine. But such a killing is a tragic case of mistaken identity, not a case of "collateral damage." That is the distinction I was trying to make even if I did not make it clearly at the time. Further, I have worked closely with the U.S. military for months in an effort to achieve a mutual goal: keeping journalists in Iraq safe and alive."
-----

Being an integral part of the mainstream media, do you think it will be Eason's responsibility to try and "sweep this under the rug?"

Um, let's see, from the hundreds of words written at Captain's Quarters, both by the Captain and several linked articles from people who were at the conference in question and confirm that he said that the US military was targeting journalists, and the evidence that he has a history of making similar unsubstantited charges, you choose to quote Jordan's own self-serving statement wherein he disavows what he said at Davos. It nonetheless is true that he accused the US military of dliberately targeting journalists, and that he personally knew of a dozen examples. It is also not the first time he has made similar accusations about the US and Israel. However, none of these ever pan out. Ever. The guy is a liar and a sensationalist and should be nowhere near a major news organization, much less running one.

CNN News Executive Eason Jordan Quits
Fri Feb 11, 6:59 PM ET

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - CNN chief news executive Eason Jordan quit Friday amidst a furor over remarks he made in Switzerland last month about journalists killed by the U.S. military in Iraq.

Jordan said he was quitting to avoid CNN being "unfairly tarnished" by the controversy.

During a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum last month, Jordan said he believed that several journalists who were killed by coalition forces in Iraq had been targeted.

He quickly backed off the remarks, explaining that he meant to distinguish between journalists killed because they were in the wrong place where a bomb fell, for example, and those killed because they were shot at by American forces who mistook them for the enemy.

"I never meant to imply U.S. forces acted with ill intent when U.S. forces accidentally killed journalists, and I apologize to anyone who thought I said or believed otherwise," Jordan said in a memo to fellow staff members at CNN.

But the damage had been done, compounded by the fact that no transcript of his actual remarks has turned up. There was an online petition calling on CNN to find a transcript, and fire Jordan if he said the military had intentionally killed journalists.

He should have been fired for selling out CNN's integrity for access to Sadaam. He has little regard for the truth.

It's interesting that you don't see Fox News reporters and executives resigning over allegations against them. Probably because Fox News doesn't have any integrity to begin with.

I didn't see Hume's broadcast so I can only guess at what he actually said. However, Roosevelt did indeed foresee that the original SS he implemented was unsustainable. He even said that ultimately the government should be involved in just 50% of it -- the rest to be the private property of the individuals in question.

However, no matter how Hume and others may have commented on Roosevelt's original intentions, that is nowhere even close to the kind of comments Jordan has made on several occasions in the past regarding deliberate targeting of journalists by American forces. To attempt to compare the two instances is ridiculous.

I have to give the man credit for at least doing the honorable thing and resigning his position voluntarily.
