peat/verm casing layer
    #3734200 - 02/05/05 06:31 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

hi guys. all these years of cultivating i used only straight verm as a casing layer. it worked good so i didnt need to change it.
but since i know that using peat could icnrease a little bit my yield i think to do it.
in a casing mix ov 50%peat/50%verm should i put any limestone flour to adjust the ph or i dont need it?

thanks

Yes peat is naturally acidic, you'll want to increase PH to the 6-8 range for an optimal casing mix.

Err, probly with peat, it is best to use oyster shell or eggshell(long term buffer) with a little hydrated lime(short acting buffer[due to it's solubility]). Do a search for measurements.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^right on
No more than 1tsp. hydrated lime per qt. of casing mix, as far as the long term buffer anywhere from 1tsp.-1tbs. per qt. will work nicely  Going from straight verm to a structurally improved mix such as peat/verm or coir/verm will (should) make a very noticable improvement in the yield department! I wouldn't worry too much about pH values, this hobby doesn't need to be that complicated unless you want it to be. Many of us have already put forth the effort so the masses don't have too  Just follow my suggestions and you'll be golden  Remember KISS
