How long to steralize

What is the best length of time to boil jars in a big pot to steralize them? Ive read in some teks, 30 mins, and in some up to an hour. Will it kill the nutrients to boil it longer than an hour?

i would recomend that you get a pressure cooker. you might find one at a thrift store, or you can by a cheep one a k-mart.

if you boil ( i have not tried this ) i would give them at least one hour.

If your are just boiling..definetly an hour!..and give a extra 5 10 min. I have done this method on two jars...one was ok..and the other seemed ok..but colonazation went to a "crawl" and when I smelled the top verm. layer it seemed alright..but but I took it out..and it was so rank smelling. ughh. so I had a 50/50 turnout. Go w/ a pressure cooker. I got one today..not only does it save mass amounts of time and make it easier..but your seralaztion % will be nearly 100%

go at least 1hr 30min i never had contams using this method. Oh yeh remember to double a-foil your jars(under and over lid).

good luck, oh yeh unless u find a pcooker cheap don't bother buying ti for brf / pf jars , u only need it for seeds.

Uh. I NEVER boil mine for more then 45 mins and I haven't had a contam yet. I've sterilzed over 70 jars this way.

i use to boil mine for about 1hr and 15mins, the few times i boiled jars for 1 30mins or lil bit longer the water always complety evaped and i had to add more water and every time the jars got contamed (but i guess i just have bad luck) hehe but finally a couple months ago i got a PC =)

My aqauntince boils his jars for 1 1/2 hour. He heats the water to a rolling boil then turns it down to the lowest setting and starts the timer. He has had NO contam problems this way.

Some say 30 mins, some say an hour and a half. Go for an hour, in my opinion.

My friend boiled 24 jars this way, he didnt have a single contam, thought he was a badass, moved onto pint jars, did the boiling thing, and had 4 of the 8 contam, if youre too poor for a pressure cooker, just stick to brf pf tek 1/2 pints, I am stressing the 1/2 part.
