Does growing with straw as a substrate yield the highest amount of mushrooms, rather than a different method?

Straw + Poo (manure) is probably the highest yielding combination overall.

yea. straw and poo is the way to go. When using straw alone it contams very easily.

Whole grains will yeild more pound for pound..other then possibly extreamly nutrious and perfectly tuned compost. But straw/poo are easier to do more of at once.
Straw is a very high yeilder though and does not contam any easier then poo if its done properly.

Thats what I did. Make up the rye (soak and simmer and PC)...inoculate it and incubate it. Once colonized mix about 5-10% colonized rye into the straw. You can either layer it (what I did) or you can mix it in. You need to pastuerize the straw..I did it in large clothing bags..then hang it up to dry for 24 hours. Cutting it up makes it work better. Shreading it in a blender makes it even better then that. Compact it down after you spawn (mix the rye with the straw) as tightly as you can with your fists. The more its cut up the less you have to compact it. Shreading it will need very little compacting. Then cover the straw with plastic (right on top of the straw..no airspace between straw and plastic) with holes poked in it. Incubate it at 75-80 degrees (or room temp) untill fully colonized then case with your favorite casing tek. Incubate again until myc is poking through..then patch and mist and fruit (give it light and fresh air exchange and a 10 degree temp drop).

I would argue that opinion---that whole grains yield more pound for pound. I'll put poo/straw/sawdust up against any whole grain. A contest you say?? I'm in!!!

Well a pound of rye can yeild me 180-200 dried grams. What does a pound of poo/straw/sawdust do for you?
Like I said, some crazy poo compost may do better, I dont know though...its the opinion of some that it can't...I'm willing to accept its possible though...

A contest is worthless in this case.
It must be YOU who fruits both substrates using the same isolate and fruiting conditions.

well, whole grains being more nutritive than straw or even straw/dung I'm willing to agree with scatmanrav on this one. Pound for pound you will get higher yields with grains. it's just more work to do grains on the same scale as straw combos.
A good side by side would be to fill a 10 gallon tube with a shitload of colonized rye grains, and another tub with straw/poo/spawn and see what happens. If rye was grown in the sizes and quantities that most straw/poo tubs are grown in it would be insane i guarantee.

Not really. They last 6-7 flushes easy and none of them that I've done contamed before I tossed it (taking up to much space for the yeild it was putting off by the 7th flush compared to new casings).

size doesn't necessarilly make it contam prone. it just makes it a pain in the ass. why prep enough rye to fill a 10gal tub when you can just make a couple jars, pasteurize some straw and drop in the rye?

Exactly. But if you do loose a tub to contams..you loose a whole hell of alot of rye and a whole lot of work.

I'm with you, I used a single quart of WBS and yeilded 360g of some killer mush, did a straw casing of the exat same size and yeilded 86g wet, plus the potency was only that of PF Tek. I'm throwin my hat in the straw ring and sticking to grains.

I had excellent results with straw personally, dont get me wrong...potency was fine and yeilds were too..but I've done grain casings slightly thinner (but the same containers) and they've yeilded me more then straight straw that thick. Poo and compost are different beasts that I know little about, but I was just speaking of most every cultivator when I made the remarks of grains yeilding more then bulk pound for pound, but not every single cultivator ...
