Does it have to be honey? Are there other household things you could use, and if so, how effective are they? (I'm rather lazy.. don't really want to run to the store just for some honey..)

It saves you germination time and it can give you 100 times more innoculant allowing you to put more mycelium in the jar and having more beginning growth points.

I just use one spoonful (regular spoon, probably about a tablespoon in size) of honey to about 1/2pint of water.

I tried molasses, just put in some myc. last night. I have a feeling it may be too "rich" but time will tell.

I've used both honey and malt powder - usually it's about a 4-5% ratio, so about 5ml of honey to 100ml H2O.

With the malt powder, it actually worked better than the honey as I found there were little specks in my honey, which multiplied as the jar incubated. But with the malt powder, you just dissolve it in a little boiling sterile water and stir, then add the rest of the water to 100ml or what ever ratio you want.

Don't expect the malt water to be clear like the honey water - it will be a little cloudy, which I feel might provide more nutrients for the growing myc.

"Mommy go out to get ya some Happy Meals shadow?"
Arent moms great, hey why dont you ask mommy to innoculate da jars for you...
"Im just playing with ya, cool?"
Im going to look into dis honey water tek myself sounds worthwhile if you can save a week and produce that much more innoculant. Here's another question:
Can you over innoculate? I know from personal experience you can if your using syringes and do not compensate for the added H2O. I hit one jar with a full syringe and my substrate was too moist and it contamed fairly early. Im talking about having an over abundance of spores for the available food supply can your cakes dry out sooner than normally or something to that effect?

Tell me something good then I might agree with you..

lol, no prob.. Just taking advantage of my youth while I've still got it, y'know? =) Lotta drawbacks though.. If I were on my own I could actually be serious about cultivation instead of having a cheap little setup I have to hide and worry about all the time.. I really look up to the real mycologists here and hope to follow in their footsteps later on in life.

Look at it this way...
Your gettin your education in mycology now and also paying your dues by having to hide em under your bed so by the time you do get your own place you can practice what you learned and maybe become a "mushroom guru/tycoon" if dats what you want. Im not sure what you mean by "follow in their footsteps" but if you referring to learning your shit and using this knowledge to helping others that are in your shoes now...
"By all means..."

Yup, definately. I'm not in it for money or anything, and I definately wouldn't make a good drug dealer.. Really not into any of that. Just constantly after new knowledge and enlightenment, both from the forums and from what this great fungus has to offer. Just reading all of the previous discussion here has changed my life, I can say that much.

The 4% is only a guideline.
Some have better luck with higher concentrations.
Just keep in mind that too much can be a problem.

Experiment
