Pruning
    #373153 - 08/16/01 03:53 PM (23 years, 2 months ago)

Anybody else prune their little guys to reduce aborts and let the others grow big? Does it really work or am I being stupid? What techniques do you use?

prune? you mean pick off all the aborts, or what?
Pruning is for a plant, not mushrooms.

So you're saying it's a waste of time? It's recommended for maturing shrooms though, correct?

All you have to do to your cake/casing is pick off the mushrooms when their veils break, or when they are fully mature if you want a print. Pick off all the aborts as well.
I guess you can call this "pruning" but most people just say "picking"...

Ok my last post (the one above this) was made WHILE godflesh wrote his, so I didn't read it...
Anyways, I don't seem to understand why you think I flamed him... I just asked him what he meant by pruning, and I guessed he meant picking off the aborts. I in no way intended to make him feel bad, and if I did, I'm sorry. I was just trying to figure out what he meant, that's all...
I don't think people on these boards have more of an "attitude" than they did years ago, I think that you've just gotten a bit more sensitive, godflesh.

Yeah I guess it's true that a lot of people here don't like to give really simple questions an answer' instead, they reply with: go reas this or go look at that... I try to answer any questions, no matter how simple or stupid they are.

I agree that the shroomery must always support one another, and as long as we continue to do this, the shroomery will always be a place to get together and help each other out.

No hard feelings godflesh.

WTF? In actual fact pruning could be a correct term for chopping out unwanted parts of a plant - and mushrooms are plants , so lets all stop being such nasty know-it-alls to newbies... Anyway - yeah mate, its good to chop out those abhorts as they are eating nutrients that your other fruits would enjoy, and when they die, they attract contams.

I've had my eye on this post to see where it goes, because I'm pretty sure I was ready to ask the question that rockfish did, except with a bit more clarity.. I may be totally wrong, but I think what he was trying to ask was, is it better to clip the shrooms, or just pick them off? I've heard of both being done, and they seem to both have their ups and downs.. with clipping you have to worry about stumps, but the mycelium isn't exposed to contams. On the other hand, if you pick them, there's no worry about anything rotting, but you have to worry about contams and should probably cover up the hole with casing mix. After reading a lot it's pretty obvious that the more logical choice is probably picking though, so new mushrooms can grow from where you picked, and there's no worry about rotting. Hope I'm not totally off..

actuall i don't think mushrooms are plants. They are a fungi.

Plants need light, photosynthesis gives em food , need water.

Just give them a chop with a sterile knife as low as you can... no problems :
Plant: living organism with neither the power of movement nor special organs of digestion.

i am confused you saying they a fungi or plant, i thought fungi someone thinks plant. ANyoen clarify this for me?

Either way i don't see how correcting someone, and providing them with the correct information can make a thread worse, only better, if done in a mature way.

granted saying
" you dumb fuckign wank stain, mushrooms are fungi not plants dip shit fuckhead" would be out of order and make a thread worse, but just saying they are not a plant and are a fungi. No flame or disrespect there.

my special pixie friend who i rely on for inspiration for posts told me to type, he jumps into my brain thru the left ear, tells my fingers to moveleft right up and down whilst over keys upon the keyboard, then exits the mulch which resides inside my head via my right ear. I then see his presence no more till the reply button has been clicked and the chance to post more informative nonsense arises.

lol
Ok, well.. they're fungi. I would've thought it to be obvious, but I guess it confuses a lot of people.
And about the whole tension thing, I've noticed lately that people tend to snap at you when you get info wrong, or have a contradicting point, so not even having newbie status yet, I was just trying to keep on safe grounds =)
