My tyvek sandwich
    #3729956 - 02/04/05 01:30 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I was thinking about how I could use tyvek and polyfil for my grain jars and I decided to make a "sandwich" with the tyvek and polyfil. What I did was took the metal lid and nailed 3 holes in it. I put tyvek over the top of the grain jar, with polyfil on top of that, and the metal lid on top of that. A final layer of tyvek goes over the metal lid. I figure this will work well because when I inoculate the jars, I can just pierce straight through all of that and not need to put a bandaid or anything over the hole. This sounds like it should work, right?

And as agar said in a thread a day or so ago, I should leave the metal bands on the jars loose while PC'ing, right?

If anyone has any quick advice I'd appreciate it, they're sitting in the PC, just waiting for a final OK from you guys.

Alot of ppl do that, minus the top layer of tyvek. The polyfill acts as a self healing injection point so theres really no need to use the top layer of tyvek. Usually its just a single hole with the polyfill pulled through with the tyvek underneath.

If your lids have holes in them there is really no need to leave the metal band loose

Okay ... agar made a post about leaving the band loose and I wasn't entirely sure if he meant for something like this so I figured I'd play it safe. I figured the extra layer of tyvek can't hurt so I put it on, again, to play it safe. I figure it'll be good insafe for whatever reason the polyfil got wet, I don't want any wicking to take place. I didn't pull the polyfil through the holes but I don't think that's a huge deal, its pressed up tight between the tyvek and metal lid.

Thanks guys!

I've seen alot of people on here just use one layer of tyvek with no problems. I would think that using two layers, plus polyfil, would inhibit gas exchange, but I could just be talking out of my ass...

I dont anticipate any problems with gas exchange, even still, keeping out contams is far more important than gas exchange. I'm willing to take the chance (even though I doubt it'll even be affected much if at all) of letting gas exchange suffer to be extra careful about contams.

Sounds like a plan! Let us know how it works out...

That would show that tyvek has poor AIR exchange qualities..not GAS exchange. Gas exchange is just the release of gasses that build up.

That doesnt mean this will be ok for gas exchange though...sounds like alot to me and I dont think it would colonize to well. I think your WAY paranoid about contam.s Gas exchange is equally as important. Doesnt matter if you have sterilize jars if they stop growing at 75% colonized...then you end up opening them and trying to case substrate that didnt finish and get contams anyway. Not that this will happen either. I'm not really sure if its sufficent gas exchange or not, but it is a valid and excellent point you should think about and watch for.

Yeah, you've got a point. Seeing as how people use just one layer of tyvek and polyfil, if gas exchange does suffer, I can always remove the extra layer of tyvek without removing the polyfil, metal lid, or bottom layer of tyvek. That way it'll be the simpler way of doing it, either way if this turns out not to be right, I have the option of fixing it.
