Table wine recommendations
    #3652510 - 01/20/05 06:58 AM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Ok. The reason I'm in this forum. I went back on Atkins after a week off and ran into some cheap filet mignon medalions at Price Rite. 1.83lbs for $10.82. So naturally I had to sear them with kosher salt and cracked pepper. And saute some mushrooms, add some minced garlic and deglaze with a red wine (Black Swan Shiraz).

Some brussel sprouts and chopped spinach with butter and salt on the side and the rest of the bottle of Shiraz and I'm a happy camper.

But to the point. Table wine. Drinkable wine for under $20 a bottle. A couple of years ago I really dug the Cabernet Sauvignons coming out of Chile. But I don't really find them anymore here in Las Vegas. I really like the Australian Shiraz. It's eminently drinkable especially with steaks, the pepperiness and spiciness works well. I also like the New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. Nice and fruity with a nice bite. Yum. Also the 2buck chuck merlots are very nice.

Any other recommendations for home cooks on a budget?

Peace,

As do I. Try the yellow tale with the purple label... good taste and fairly cheap (<$20).

> I also like the New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.

Barringer makes a nice sauvignon blanc that is fairly cheap (<$20)... just watch the age and make sure they aren't trying to sell you something too old.

Black opal ---->australian shiraz about $7
4 Bucks --->california their cab is better than the merlot but both are well worth
the $4 price tag

Cool. Thanks for the recommendations. I'll try a couple of them out. I saw the Louis Jadot at the corner market yesterday, but haven't tried it yet. Black Opal shiraz is good. I love shiraz. I'll try the Yellow Tale when I get the chance.

I've had Berrringer Chardonnay I believe, good if I remember correctly,Veramonte sounds familiar, but I don't think I've tried it.

Thanks again, any other suggestions come to mind?

Peace,

Yikes! I hate that shiraz. I much prefer the Rosemount shiraz.
Anways, my recommendations:

Rex Goliath 47lb Rooster Merlot or Cabernet - ~$10/bottle
Red Diamond Merlot or Cab - ~$10/bottle (typically well aged on the shelf!)
Ecco Domani Merlot - ~$10/bottle
Robert Mondavi Private Selection Chardonnay - ~$10-$15/bottle

if you ever want a bit of variety, add a gewurztraminer to your selection.

The "Tugboat Red" is nice, from Lucas Wines. Their "Blues" is a nice white table wine as well.

Then there's Grenade,a personal favorite. It's an Armenian Pomegranite wine, hard to find but goes about $15, tastes like a red but a bit more.. interesting.

GRANDMA'S MOONSHINE GRAPE WINE RECIPE

Copyright 1992 by W.D. Herr Systems

2 - 12 oz. cans frozen grape juice

3 1/2 cups of white granulated sugar

1/3 cake of yeast (Fleishmann's is best)

a large Balloon and some strong string

one Gallon Jug

First, set the grape juice out to thaw, until slushy. Next, mix the sugar thoroughly in with the grape juice. Pour the sugar and juice, into the gallon jug.

Dissolve the yeast in a cup of lukewarm* water and add to the juice mixture in the gallon jug. (*If water is too warm, it will kill the active ingredient in the yeast that causes fermentation.) Mix everything thoroughly. Now add just enough lukewarm water to fill the gallon jug up to about 2 inches below the neck. When this is done, place the balloon over the top of neck and secure tightly with string. Note! This must be an air tight fit... If you have followed all directions carefully, the balloon will soon start to expand with the gas, caused by the fermentation. Store the mixture in a cool (but not cold) area, 60 to 75 degrees is ideal, for a period of from 3 to 6 weeks.

Check the balloon every other day. If the balloon expands too large, untie and allow the gas to escape and then retie, but be sure to retie tightly to make it air tight again. When the balloon ceases to expand, the wine is done.

NOTICE - Do not bottle the wine before it is done. Working wine (fermenting) can explode a bottle from the gas pressure of fermentation.

Strain your wine with a cheese cloth or a tea towel and pour into a bottle, using a snap-on type of cap or use a cork. Store bottles on their sides in a cool, dark place. All that's left now to do, is ENJOY YOURSELF.

I think the most versatile red wine would be a cabernet sauvignon. It fit's with alot of dishes. It's neither too dry nor too sweet.
Two Oceans have been making some pretty decent wines for awhile now. It's South African, and I think around $20 a bottle.
I'm also partial to Cawarra's selection of red's.
