I just got a brand new baattlestar 4000 I am goin to be using for all my digital multimedia work but I have this old Dell dimension 8100 that pretty much BLOWS....but I figure if I upgrade it, and totally cleanse the hardrive, reinstall XP and only have 1 proram running....(protools LE), then it might be able to work. What do you guyss think I should get added on to my Dell? The thing came factory stock and it looks like there are bout 4 slots in there to add more PCI cards or whateer I need for fasteer processing>>>do you think it can be done?

Meh, I'd install linux on it (didn't see that coming, did you ) though admittedly there isn't much to compete with protools on linux, you can still use it for plenty of other useful things like an internal file and webserver.

linux users are like vegans.
they stand for a good cause but are annoying as fuck and they make you want to shoot them in the face.

Actually, it was late, I should have written *n?x.
And believe it or not, I'm not really an evangelist... I just try to ensure people know the option is there because, believe it or not, there are STILL people that think Windows is the ONLY operating system in existence. Past that, I'm not going to push it hard at all; I could care less if your *n?x experience is as good as mine - crawl back to windows if you hate it, as is your right

Ive heard about linux but not much. I still think its in the experimental stage to actually compete with windows. But I will look into it if you actually think it will be good for runnnin proTools. I know for a fact that Windows is a good all around system but this computer Ik settin up I dont want to be crowded with all those bullshit programs runnin

Linux is far from being in the experimental stage. It's more stable than windows, and has been for years. Windows is developed with a business mindset - release dates and such with developers fearing for their jobs. Linux is developed with an art-of-programming mindset - quality of code and reputation of the programmer on the line.
I don't think protools runs on linux, but here is an interesting article you may want to read for more information about linux and recording software on it.

You really need a mac if you want a dedicated recording comp. You could just sell your used computer and buy a used mac. Either that or you need a specialized audio hook up with fire wire straight to the mobo and i doubt that computer even supports ieee 1394. If you just want to fuck around id go with a soundblaster card and a cheap version of cubase or something.

you only need a Mac if you want to spend your time creating rather than troubleshooting.
ProTools requires hardware to run so you need a PCI card or MBox etc.
i my G4.
the G5s aren't ready yet, serious noise issues...

I know a MAC would be my best bed but I was hoping to turn this POS into a dedicated computer only for running PROtools. I just got this battlestar system and to invest in yet another COmputer might tear a hole in my pocket
