For our next season of organizing adventuresome mushrooming excursions in exciting Mexico, we have organized a new slate of tours, each offering unique travel, cultural and, of course, fungi experiences with expert local bilingual mycologists. In addition to our three previous foray venues centered in the regions of Tlaxcala, Veracruz and the Copper Canyon, for 2005 we are researching some potentially exciting mushrooming locations in the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca. Watch this site or Contact Us for news and updates on our upcoming forays.
Dr. Gast?n Guzm?n
Our Veracruz tour leader, Dr. Gast?n Guzm?n, former President of the Latin American Mycological Society, has been a mycology professor and researcher for more than 40 years. In 1971 he received a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation of New York to study the genus Psilocybe, which ultimately resulted in a comprehensive book on the subject. He founded the Department and Herbarium of Fungi in Xalapa, and currently holds the Emeritus Research chair at the Ecological Institute of Xalapa. He has published more than 350 papers and nine books, including the first book, in 1977, on Mexican mushrooms. He has described more than 200 new taxa on fungi worldwide. ---------
I should point out to all that Dr. Guzm?n does not take people out in search of magic mushrooms. These are edible mushroom forays. Not hallucinogenic mushroom forays.
The police and Federales still hassle shroom pickers when looking for magic shrooms in Mexixo and frown upon people who come only for those mushrooms.
This is a straight peoples foray shroom excursion.
I have been a collegue of Guzman for years and he will not provide people with places to look for magic shrooms, although if you find some along the trip he will tell you what they are and advise you about them. However, if one is interested in mushrooms in general and edibles then this is a great foray for anyone intersted in mushrooms in general.
