Glass blowing???
    #3726111 - 02/03/05 08:19 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, I really want to learn how to "blow glass" (make pipes and bongs etc)  I have seen on TV that some glass blowers can rent space (ovens etc) to make their creations???

Anyone know of any places like this in Vancouver???

How long would I need to go to school(trade course , etc) how much would it cost???

Are there any schools in Vancouver??? (I assume there are :stoned: )

Glass blowing, like writing music, reading, and growing "things"( fungi etc) will become one of my biggest hobbies within a year or so, I can feel it.

And the best part is I get to make my own pipes and bongs, and then test them, and give them away to friends.

Thanks.

Psilo

Glass blowing is pretty sweet.

There's a store that I sometimes go to, where professionals blow glass, and make very, very amazing pieces of art. And you can watch them do it, it's really neat, I think they put shows on pretty much everyday.

I'd imagine they'd have some kind of lessons or something... I've been thinking about checking out glass blowing as well.

well your talking about lamp working or torch work, not really the same as glass blowing, just in that glass blowing is a term used for "soft" glass, which is what vases/platters/ goblets.. the like are made out of. totally different stuff.
so searching for glass blowers might not give you the results you are looking for.
most people i've known have learned by working with glass beads first to learn the basics and then they moved on to Pyrex tubes.
and bead classes can be kinda cheap so look for that, maybe.
and i know that you can set up a home studio for relatively cheap, i know a girl that used to have her gas tanks on her back porch and the lines fed through her window into her little studio, landlord would have shat if he had seen it.
so it was two tanks, a torch mounted to a table, and a torch head ( this is the most expensive part, my buddy just spent 750 on a new torch head, but cheaper ones for starts.) and a small electric kiln ( to properly cool the glass) , and materials of course.
don't know about canada but bead classes are about all there is in my area. hope this helped.

No man, I don't really know too much about it.

It's sort of a glass art store, that has glass blowing inside it... it's really nice. But they're completely set up and it's a fairly big store... I'd imagine they own the stuff.

If you're going to be taking chemistry, see if your school offers a glassblowing course. Though, its for repairing some broken glassware, a la glass welding, and some blowing, like making reaction specific glassware. Not really any metal/dye infusing like you are probably looking for.

If you can take it as a class, that would still give you some experience with working with glass, even if its not the decorative style like you want.

There are three active glassblowers that I know of registered to this board. I don't want to name usernames, but search for glass threads in all forums and you should find them, as they may not see this post. Shoot them a PM.
