That I was paying her.

Which goes back to my first round of questions in reference to whether you think the administration or any other government agency should be hiring speechwriters or writers of any kind or spokespeople or press agents or communications people? Really, I just don't get the objection.

My only issue is that of discloseure.

It doesn't have to be an NBC special to satisfy me, just that it was on public record who was paid for what article and how much.

It's tax money. We need to know where all of it goes.

The issue that I have with it is that she did not disclose the fact that she had been paid.

There is a difference between someone who is openly employed by an official and a person who portrays themself as an independent commentator. It is unethical for a commentator to not disclose the motives and dealings which might have an affect on what they are saying.

That is disturbing when the government gives money to people and in return those people push a certain argument that falls in line with what the administration wants. It smacks of bribery and propaganda. Now granted, the people who were given money were people who were pretty much already in agreement with the particular policies in question, so it's not like they changed their opinions or anything. But, it is still troubling.

Do you remember when the government gave certain television production companies money to inject anti-drug messages into some of their shows? It's the same type of shit. Your tax money is being used to try to persuade people's thinking. It isn't right at all and it's one more example of how fucked up the government can be at times.

This seems to be a beef you have with Maggie Gallagher and she seems to agree with you in that she has issued an apology of sorts saying she should have disclosed that she had previously received money to assist in preparing a brochure, albeit one whose assertions she already agreed with. I myself would not have been so quick. Should she disclose all sources of income she has had? Maybe the Catholic church hired her for something. The ethical issues of journalists do not apply to commentators or any other editorial writers. Their product is their opinion and I expect them all to have agendas. You should too.

She was paid to assist in writing a brochure, not to "push an agenda" in her column. As you say, she didn't change her opinion at all. And the amount is ludicrous. I would expect to have to pay much more to get a columnist to whore his/her writings for money. I haven't read a lot of Ms. Gallagher but I do know that she already supports these policies.

Oh yeah, I remember them. BIG money too, not a piddling $21,000. I tried to search for just how much money is in the federal budget for public communications but it wasn't all in one place. What was it, Health and Human Services that paid her. The federal budget probable includes billions for public relations, press secretaries, communication directors. Has for years. Should Bush pay his speechwriters out of his own pocket? Feh, a tempest in a teacup.

Basically. She managed to piss off a bunch of people who don't read her column anyway. The ones who do aren't going to give a shit.

Third Journalist Was Paid to Promote Bush Policies
Quote:
WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 - The Bush administration acknowledged on Friday that it had paid a third conservative commentator, and at least two departments said they were conducting internal inquiries to see if other journalists were under government contract. The investigative arm of Congress also formally began an inquiry of its own.

The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed having hired Michael McManus, who writes a weekly syndicated column and is director of a nonprofit group called Marriage Savers. Mr. McManus was paid $10,000 to help train counselors about marriage, an arrangement first reported in USA Today, but officials said he was paid for his expertise rather than to write columns supporting administration policies.

At the same time, the Government Accountability Office told the Education Department it was investigating a $240,000 contract with the commentator Armstrong Williams that came to light earlier this month, requesting that education officials turn over any paper or video materials related to the case. Another conservative writer, Maggie Gallagher, admitted earlier this week having a $21,500 deal with the Department of Health and Human Services.

Not a journalist, not even primarily a writer ("director of a non-profit group called Marriage Savers"), and he wasn't paid to "promote" policy he was paid to train counselors about marriage. And peanuts at that.

yes it is called propaganda. Is ANYONE surprised by this?
Sadly...right wingers will not care that the bush administration is buying the media and turning it into a propaganda machine. They'll find some way to blame democrats or some how convince themselves that having state run media is ok and necessary in "these times"

Hey! but did you see that statue fall over on the news 700 times! wow the rest of the world really loves us, we have a "coalition of the willing"!

It's a sad sad state in the US right now.
