crushed coral as buffering agent
    #371248 - 08/13/01 05:49 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

I am not sure if this has already been discussed, but what the hell.

Has anyone tried using crushed coral to bring up the ph of 50/50 instead of lime and/or crushed oyster shell? Any problems encountered with this substance? As far as I can tell they're quite similar, and crushed coral seems to be better at buffering than crushed oyster shell.. I just have better access to the coral and would like to know.

Thanks, and peace to all.

If corals are also mainly Calcium Carbonate, as oystershels are, then I don?t see a problem in using it.

Thinking back to my chemistry class, I'm pretty sure that white chalk is also calcium carbonate.
If you crushed up a stick of white chalk, that should work.

It?s usually a mixture of CaCO3, Ca SO4, kaoline and other substances.

The crushed coral I am looking at contains aragonite which supposedly increases buffering power to 25 times that of crushed oyster shell and such. It also contains trace elements such as strontium.
Has anyone actually _used_ crushed coral before? If not, looks like I may have to take one for the shroomery team and give her a blind go :)

peace,

In theory i think it should work....the crushed coral buffers ph in my mini reef aquarium which has a much bigger "bio-load" than cased mushrooms...so why not give it a go....im thinking of having my friend try this one out also.....
