casing.. i think i'm just not understanding it right

ok i've been reading the life out of this site and it's a great site. i'm still a little unclear on casing. when you are makeing a casing are you takeing the cakes(in my case i'm useing a straw based mycobag) and crumbleing them on the vermiculite to form a big flat cake or are you trying to get the mycelium to grow on a new substrate and fruit from there. i beleive it's the second one but can someone clearify this for me and let me know the best way to go. i also heard about spawning your new substrate in 2 layers and not just on the bottom vermiculite.(bottom:verm. Then:spawn Then:substrate Then:spawn Next:substrate Then:casing layer) i plan on useing straw as a substrate because high mountain compost wants $53.00 for a 10 pound bag of their stuff. here are the pics of my supplies(i have 90mm synthetic filter discs on the way and another 66Q.t rubbermaid tub also) i was thinking of cutting a hole in the top of the rubbermaid container and covering it with a filter disc. if anyone has a better idea of what i should do with these supplies or i have something mapped out wrong i welcome your input.

Casing is simpler than you think .
Basically it is a thin top coating for subs , meant to aide in microclimate above the sub level .
You crumble cakes , spread grains or top coat a bulk sub with it .

Protects colonized sub from drying out .
Provides humid microclimate for primordia .
Acts like a resivoir for maturing mushies .
Supports growth of frutification and enhances microorganisms .

Hope this clears things up a tad .
