Senior project: Volunteers needed
    #3724328 - 02/03/05 01:11 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

For those who don't know, I'm a senior in college majoring in sociology. I'm planning on doing my senior project on political conversions, i.e. going from liberal to conservative or vice-versa. I need volunteers who have undergone such a conversion and who would be willing to be interviewed. I already know some of you who, like me, went from liberal to libertarian, but if there are any of you who went from conservative to liberal, I'd be especially interested in interviewing you, as I'm having trouble finding such people. It will be a while before I actually start doing the interviews, but I just figured I might as well throw this out there now to see who's interested.

Good luck finding someone who went from conservative to liberal. Once you see the light it is hard to act like you are blind. I was once a bit of a liberal. Glad I got that out of my system.

AhronZombie (or however he spells it) claims to have converted from a conservative to a liberal overnight after the men in black battered down his door or something along those lines. Haven't seen him for a while though.

I have always been fairly middle of the road... conservative when it comes to spending money and size of the government and liberal when it comes to personal freedom and protecting the constitution. (I do not consider the current neo-con republicans to be conservative when it comes to spending money and size of the government.) I would consider myself to have switched from republican to democrat, but only because I cannot stand the neo-con party. To be honest, I have a hard time with the democrats and their out-of-control spending as well. Donno if this is what you are looking for or not...

It's going to be hard finding conservative people who went liberal.  It will be very easy to find liberals who went conservative.  Good luck on on finding a variety of people.  You can interview me if you want to.  Wow...if I was mentioned in a college thesis I would be a star!!

Ya. One thing I'm going to try and figure out with this paper is why that is(a simple "conservatives are right and liberals are wrong" answer won't fly).

How about a conversion from Anti-Drug conservative to Mushroom loving libertarian?

Well more along the lines of conservative to libertarian but what the heck.

Sounds good. I'll interview anyone who's had some sort of political conversion. The more interviews, the better my data.

Modern day American liberalism tends to be idealistic. It focuses its efforts and dreams upon bettering the world. When liberals try to better the world they often come to two conclusions:

1. Utopia is impossible. No matter how hard you try to make things a certain way human nature will thwart your plans.

2. The actions that are needed to institute the change and improvement of the world are often more terrible or inefficient than the original conditions.

i at one point actually liked libertarianism a lot. As time went by and I came to my self, I became liberal. I'm basically far far left at a smaller scale; I still think very poorly of a big federal government, and generally support free trade..

I went from somewhat liberal (dem supporter) to conservative during the bush administration. However, to be honest, i am very independently minded and could easily swing back to the dems if they ever get their act together (not looking too good) so i dont think i would be the best candidate. I have so many reasons to moving to more conservative so I would be interested in what kind of questions you are going to ask your subjects. Maybe you could even post your final project here.

If your interested, I've moved farther left than I was four or five years ago but I've always been left of center I guess. I still retain my belief in a very small federal government and am a huge supporter of state's rights.

There is no perfect outline for a society on the economic and political scales IMO because societies change and so do those who own/control the rescources that the population uses and needs. There will always be an ebb and flow to power and that is why no policy is concretely better. So alot of conservative policies are not stupid to me but the idea that this country needs a more conservative, social darwinist, and capitalistic government is. At this point in American history most this country would benefit from a shift towards more leftist policies in many aspects I think.

The worst part about being liberal is that you have the democratic party representing you. That is why the shift happens to the right more often because the dems are frustrating, inept, and barely left in the first place. The reps fuck up everything too and in doing so they prove their point that the federal government doesn't work. So then it sounds like they may be onto something to some people because they use their inability to make things better as a reason to be voted for.

I'm sure there's a lot of truth in that. I also have another working theory that has to do with the fact that liberalism stresses open-mindedness as a value. By teaching their kids to be open-minded, liberals leave them more susceptible to other ideas, including those of conservatives.

Good point. Moderate and mild liberals tend to force themselves be open-minded(or they at least pretend to be). The extreme liberals are not open-minded at all. Conservatives as a whole tend to be more "immobile" than liberals when it comes to changing their minds and listening to other viewpoints. At least that is what I have noticed in my years on planet Earth.

be realistic, most people do NOT put as much careful thought into the analysis and theories behind their political views as you will find here. you are using this forum (and others?) as a sample (subconciously), but it is an incredibly skewed sample. the basic fact is that once people stop being supported by mommy and daddy, they find themselves struggling for money (usually) and want to keep as much of it as possible i.e. reduce taxation AMAP. think about those surveys that always come out about political knowledge. the average person is NOT well informed and does not put a great deal of pressure and analysis upon the political views. i have more reasons why the conversion is more likely the other way, but basically it comes down to self-interest and being less confronted by the sufferring of others and wanting to fix it.

and though they might not directly admit it, libertarians can be very utopian and idealistic about the consequences of a free market.

Good point. When people have to actually support themselves they become more concerned with where their money goes.

Self-interest does play a part I'm sure. But, self-interest in the marketplace seems to be more efficient and bring about greater prosperity for everyone than mediocrity-inducing socialism.

I also think that a lot of the points of view that reside on the Left tend to be utopian or wannabe utopian. I still think that as a person ages they are more likely to realize utopia is not possible and therefore they will probably move more to the Center or the "take responsibility for yourself" area of the Right.

I think it is a truism that as people age they move away from hyperbole and extremism in general; whether it is on the Left or the Right.

and though they might not directly admit it, libertarians can be very utopian and idealistic about the consequences of a free market.

Very true indeed. The free market is not perfect and it does not solve all problems(in fact it creates some). The whole trick is to balance everything and try to find a situation where the most "good" happens and the least "bad" happens.
