could you take a pice of mush like you were gonna clone onto agar and put it into a jar of sawdust/compost instead to get colonized substrate?

it might work. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3712822/an/0/page/0 I took a chuni from afresh port from the store and put it in some karo. It still has good color but i dont know if it is taking to the juice

You should give it a try. If you clone directly to substrate though its hard to spot bacterial contamination. It is much easier to see what the mycellium looks like on agar.

You could also try cardboard cloning if you are looking for agar substitutes. It works for many species, and could work with a supermarket clone. It is generally easy to do, and usually results in clean tissue with minimal contamination...
