wbs to straw unclean?...urg
    #3723252 - 02/03/05 02:18 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

how necessary is it to work under the strictest sanitary conditions while breaking up wbs cakes to spawn to pasturized straw and mix it all together? it took a while to get this all done, from wbs jars to plastic bag to dumping it on the straw and repeating for all the jars (tub w/ straw was closed inbetween cake dumping). i fear that contamination may only be a few days away. anyone else start up some straw substrate and feel that they wouldn't possibly resist contamination and then be pleasantly surprised?

Properly pasteurized straw is more contam resistant than many people realize. If you took reasonable precautions then you should be fine.

I have never had any problems with getting my straw colonized after a
good pasturization. I read that if it takes over a few days then it
will contaminate (think it was Stamets book). But I have had very
slow colonizing straw (too dry) making it so I donno about that :-)

So far I've done 5 straw casings, 3 large and 2 small, all of them done in a tub with boiling water poured over and no thermometer. Mixed spawn open air in the living room and had no contams from them. You could very well be pleasantly surprised.

They're in my humidified closet getting manual air exchange but its a large closet with a fan moving around air so they have a good amount of fresh air within the closet between exchanges. A HEPA runs 24/7 right outside the closet and I toss all contams when I get them. I dont even clean out contamed jars anymore...just toss them.
