Betel Nuts

I bought a bag of betel nuts. I've tried chewing them, crushing them with lime (the mineral) and sucking thm etc but have not been able to get even the slightest effect.

Anyone else tried them?

What if I soaked them in vodka and tried drinking the solution?

my friends i worked with are from Micronesia (small group of islands between japan and hawaii) they chewed this stuff like americans smoke cigarettes, the put a piece of betel nut, some weird leafs, some white powder (they said it was like shell or something) and a little tobacco, they say it gets them high, i tried it a few times, it did nothing but make my mouth raw and taste funny, i assume if you do it alot you would get a mild effect somewhat like smoking a cigarette, i want to go get some from the asian store and try it out a little, maybe try to stop smoking

Chewing betel nut is big in the Solomon Islands and also with Taiwanese rural taxi-drivers. Along the roads in taiwan there is red stains everywhere from them spitting it out - and stalls with young girls that sell betel-nut - and rumoured - other services too...
The taxi drivers use it chronically and it is a mild narcotic - as they always seem quite normal
