Green moss... Yes, it exists...

I have heard of its use on outdoor patches, it seems to hold water very well, although it is a bit on the airy side. As stated above, I have no idea of its Ph range, so you would probably need to test it so you know at makeup. The only drawback I can see is the color... I wouldn't want a green casing layer, even if it was supposed to be like that. It could be difficult to distinguish from moldy moss...

You can PC sphagnum moss, and you can use it for a humidity control, but...

DO NOT let it come in contact with your mushrooms. Rare, but possible, that the bacteria that the sphagnum usualy harvests may destroy the mycelium. (My terrarium, with the never ending mushrooms, will not grow where the actual sphagnum rests in the soil. I now use it as a mix to keep the mushrooms from overcomming my tank.)

The spahgnum may be sterile, but it has a unique structure that allows a peticular air-born bacteria to flourish within its runners. It is actually helpful to humans, like an anti-biotic, but also acts as an mild anti-fungicide. (Sphagnum was once harvested to help soldiers wounds heal faster by dressing thier infections with patches of fresh and boiled sphagnum.) Its anit-fungal, anti-biotic traits, along with its moisture retention is the reason why you see it in potting mixes.

Here is a quick info link...

There are many, many varieties
