Sorry to bump this but I have a current question [Re: djred]
    #3689300 - 01/27/05 04:18 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

The only problem about the leaching tek ( http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/24375 ) is that it says this:

"if it?s fresh poo, it needs to be leached and can also be dried. pick off any rocks and foreign matter whether fresh or dry: leaching is just soaking out the ammonia from animal urine - some farm animals have worse manners than rugby fans, and will piss and shit down their legs with gay abandon. You don?t need to bother with old poo, as it?ll have probably been leached by the rain. Soak the poo in water for about 24 hours and then drain it good.

some dry it out on a tarp in the sun/air, and some even use a box with a fan. don?t use an oven - think of the people who share the oven! it?s a good idea to break the poo up as it dries. To speed up the drying, you could break it up into small pieces at least the size of a golf ball, and break a few open every now and then to check to see what the moisture level inside the poo is like."

This says absolutely nothing about using a pillow case or anything like that. It just says "soak 24 hrs...then drain" with zero details. I got a big pile of fresh horse poo, but if I just try and soak it loose in water, it will dissolve/turn to mud and I'll lose a ton when I drain it.

Is a pillow case soak the only option to leach??? Please help.

Thanks in advance

RL

And now I find this conversation between Hamurabi and George Castanza:

"hi guys. i have a store bought composted manure. does it need to be leached firstly?
leaching= i put it in a container full of water and then drain it?" -Hamurabi

"no ...just bake it at 170F for 6-12 hours and spawn" -George

You GOTTA love the contradictions......

What am I supposed to think???????

No contradiction.
Store bought manure is de-amonianized (lol). Cause plants dont like it either. So it dont need leeching.

I soak in a bucket and pour and drain after 24 hours, push and squeeze etc etc.. ;P

A pillow case or old sweater is easier!

OK I see the difference.

TD put roughly 15 cups fresh horse poo loose in water and basically ended up with dark brown water from what it looks like.

Hopefully when he strains it, he will be able to retain most of the poop.

I'll do a search but I'm wondering what temp the water should be or if it matters.....

Thanks again.

I soaked outside temps were 50-60 at that time. No problem, I dont think temp matters, much.

Next time I will catch some of the drainage, poo-tea, for dunking and soaking!

If its amonia free you mean? If theres no amonia, no need to be leeched...this was covered just a few posts up, did you bother to read it first? If it has amonia then of course it must be leeched..

OK so TD finally got an old pillow case. He filled it with fresh poop and submerged it in his bathtub. All the water turned SO dark brown! Is he doing something wrong? Does he need to squeeze and massage the pillowcase in the water to properly leach or can he just let it sit?

Thanks in advance,

RL

I'll assume that means that the water SHOULD turn dark brown and that letting it sit is A OK.

Did not massage my poo, just rinsed and drained once or 2 times. But then I let it dry a week or 2. Still was moist as hell but wanted to be sure that the ammonia was gone.
So just me you propably are fine after a good leech.

The dark brown is normal, it is the poo-tea! If no ammonia in it, great to dunk and soak in!

Yeah let it sit. After 24 hours give it one quick rinse, drain it.

I guess I'll have to start sniffing/inhaling around it a lot more. I tend to hold my breath.
