inoculating a jar with 2 different strains.
    #3719925 - 02/02/05 06:01 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

What would happen if you inoculated a jar with 2 or even 4 different strains? I was wondering that and didnt see it anywhere. (I dont think this should be in advanced mushroom cultivation because this isnt too advanced.)

from what i've read, they'll either duke it out, or live a type of symbiotic relationship (sharing nutes or something like that)

ya or one will just completely take over the other, i wouldn't reccomend it, but for the hell of it just do it and clear up some of the conroversy, unless you can't afford to take a chance with one of your jars.

I tried this with the Texas strain versus the PF strain. Tried and true, PF totally kicked its ass and took over the cake. I know Texas is supposed to be an aggressive grower, but not for me

There is no controversy.
The jar will colonize and fruit and you won't know which strain fruited. Is this a benefit?

grow 2 strains that don't resemble each other, whats the problem with that? the controversy is what will happen. so why not make an experiment out of it.

Again, there is no controversy.
Been there, done that.
One, 2 or none of the strains will fruit.

Anno is right there is NO controversy they will battle until one wins and fruits or 2 and then it will be mutant, even then youll probably get lower yields due to myc having to fight off another type of myc :peace:

thats what i was trying to tell him, three different people said each three of those answers, i said go for it and see what happens, if three people are giving three different answers to the same question that would appear to be some controversy....

if you do a google search youll find pages and pages on this. Some people have gotten 2 strains to fruit from one cake but even if that does happen itll be a mutant, why would you want a mutant shroomies when you can have perfectlly fine ones doing it the way its supposed to be done, Just me 2 cents though :peace:

well i don't recall anyone asking, but anyways let them do what they want, if he wants to grow 2 or 4 diff strains in one jar then thats fine with me, i was merely suggesting something for him to try since at the time there was no clear answer to the question at hand.

this forum is meant to help people if his chances of success were high people would be encouraging him, I'm just trying to let him know hell have better results sticking to one strain until he gets experienced enough to try cross-breeding. :peace:

Couldn't you use this to have a "battle of the strains!!" You could pit different strains against each other. Then which ever wins you use to make a new jar and pit it against a different strain.

Two strains go in only one comes out.....ALIVE!!!!!!!!
