What Does "IT" Take...?
    #3715982 - 02/01/05 09:06 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

What does "IT" take to personally draw YOU into a thread....?

Is it based on how "Taboo" or "shocking" the title of the thread is...?

Is it based on the actual "Poster" of the thread, and how familiar you are with that person...?

Is this forum centered on "clicks" or groups of friends...?

I ask these questions, not as a whine or a complaint - at all....  I wrote a thread last night that I would have liked to hear other's views and/or opinions on the subject matter or concept that was presented....  It is something I have given much thought, and has been waiting to bust out of my head for some time....  Written with content in mind, as well as an element of entertainment....  I very seldom make threads in any forum, but when I do it seems to be very seldomly read by anyone....  Again, I am not whining, I am just wondering why....?  It is not even the fact that I wrote it, as I would be just as perplexed, interested, and challenged had someone else written it, and I had found it....

Is "Music = Math + Emotion" just too "boring", and not an S&P type of topic, is it just not "shocking" enough to draw an interest to click and read, is it because I am an unfamiliar "face" here at S&P, or was the thread just not worthy of taking the time...?  Yeah, I know, define "worthy"....  :smirk:

Perhaps all of the above...?  Just curious what drives one to engage in a topic....

If the word 'Porn' (or one of it's variants) is in the subject line I always look at the thread. Other than that, it's a crap shoot.

If a topic is a perfect circle, there's nothing to grasp, is there? Mainly all you can do is agree or add another circle, but most people aim for the topics with jagged edges, so that they have something to hold on to, to change, to discuss. Controversial threads are full of these edges, while topics nearly everyone agrees on are not.

And some topics are just boring :smirk:

So usually I only check the topics that appear interesting, and then only the ones that are jagged end up creating a lot of debate and discussion. If everything's in perfect harmony with a thread, then it will die very quickly, but in turbulence much more can come of it.

I saw the "music = math + emotion" thread title and thought, "yep, that sounds about right, next thread."

I read most of your "music...emotion..." post, but didn't feel disposed to reply. Not because there was anything wrong with it; I just didn't have anything to say about it. I've had the same thing happen to me too. I started a thread a couple of weeks ago, about a subject that I gave alot of thought to, and I got only one reply. I think Ravus is right, the threads with "jagged-edges" are more enticing. I guess you gotta show some leg (and/or cleavadge) to get noticed in this forum.

There have been some threads that I reluctantly decided to peek into, and to my suprise, I found there was a really interesting dialouge going on.

Have you noticed there is also alot of turmoil in this forum? I haven't really spend much time in the other forums (besides the hunting forum) but I'm willing to bet this forum is the most drama filled forum of any other here on the shroomery ubb's. If I were to guess why that is, I'd say it's because alot of people come here with the expectation that their ideas will be accepted and applauded, but they soon become disallusioned by the apathy or even the opposition that they get instead. This is not a virtual-haven from the darwinism of the outside world; survival of the fittest is the law of the jungle --and S&P.

Aaahhh, so it would seem to be that Controversy and Debate is what drives the temptation of a philosopher to participate....

So I have a few questions....    :smirk:

Is it something to "hold onto" by staying safely out in the "rough edges" of a deeply and individually subjective topic based on unswaying and deeply rooted beliefs....?

Is it the "majority" goal in a Philosophical Community to prove one's own standpoint with a sort of "passion", and a way to feel a sort of empowerment by "solidifying" those beliefs thru the self expression of one's own perspective with witty and brilliant debating tactics/stratagies of opposition....?

I honestly know NOTHING about Philosophy....  No joke....  Never had a class, never read a book about it....  I just like to dive into things I know nothing about, and participate my way into learning thru~ "hands-on experience"....  My specialty in life seems to be in math and solving problems.....  Sssoooooooo, maybe my blind and ignorant entrance into this type of forum with a preconceived notion based on "impression" was just my misunderstanding after all....?  Eeeehhhh....?

I had actually thought that it would be a goal within a Philosophical Community to start building foundations for a common ground to stand upon, so as to see how that common ground can be spread thru logics and ideas (can I say together?) to help prove and grow upon other theories of spirituality and the meaning of life....?    My bad....!?    :smirk:

But as I see where my "logical ideas" will most likely not be equal to your "logical ideas", how does common ground ever develop...?  Seems to be a cruel joke on us....!    Are we victims of our own intelligence and individualism, or the lack thereof....?

There are certain members whose threads I'm more inclined to open than others. I prefer threads where someone can get right to the point, so I don't tend to read threads by some of the more long-winded members here(Ped, Markos, gettingjiggywithit, etc.). I try to resist the temptation to read threads about UFO's, Reptilians, the illuminati, etc. because first of all, I don't see what they have to do with Spirituality, and second, I find that most of the people who post those threads tend to have an aversion to real debate. If there's a thread dealing with questions about religion, philosophy, spirituality, theology, etc., and it appears that the person starting the thread genuinely wants an open discussion(including those who disagree with them), then I'll usually be interested in them. One exception is threads about free will. I find such discussions usually don't go anywhere.

Hmm, have I ever lost some? Nope. All of my threads are thought-provoking and interesting with a dash of controversy a hint of wit and the occasional surprise of double-entendre (just-in-case).

Oh yeah - it helps if you get banned once or twice first!

I want to respond to this comment and I hope you read this,

I've never taken a class in philosophy either, and I know next to nothing about conventional, academic philosophy, or famous philisophical arguments. BUT, I've got my own 'home-brewed' philosophy that could stand up to any wise-guy, ancient or modern. The point: you don't have to be super-educated to have wisdom (although, I guess it couldn't hurt to have some book-smarts under your belt).

Well, that is good to know....     I tend to think I have a "logical" perspective over what one would call "wisdom" - as I see it anyway....    Is there a test to take to "measure" your naturally givien/developed "wisdom" or "philosophical" prowess...?

Logic Vs illogic was my reason for the Math/Emotions post....  Math is very logical to me, whereas emotions seem to have no logic....  But there seems to be a simple tie between logic and emotions thru music....  I was seeking more insight into emotions to help me understand more about something that seems so illogical to me....
