Is there a reason that there arent that many post in this section with people using rye? Any reasons why it seems like not that many people use rye?

WBS results are competitive with rye, and easier to work with in my opinion. It's pretty tricky to get the moisture content right with rye, I think alot of new growers have much better luck with WBS as a result. Just my .02

I just knocked up some rye. I am unfamiliar, so I wouldn't know. I am treating it as any other grain sub.

wbs is just as good, easier to find and easier to work with, thus the lack of rye on this board

I think its easier to find and cheaper. I prefer it to WBS though.. Or a mixture of mostly rye and some WBS

I prefer mixing grains. Rye and millet, and will be trying out wheat berries. Spelt and millect colonized comparably to Rye, however all spelt casing were lost to trich so fruiting wasnt compared. Grains seem to be easy to use and easy to get, more than WBS or PF or whatever else IMO. Soak, maybe simmer, PC and noc. BEEEautiful.

so far i probally like the finch seed above all else, wbs and rye are about equal in my eyes, but finch seed is probally the easiest thing to work with IMHO

Both WBS and the PF tek substrate are grains. WBS being wild bird seed (mostly millet with some other grains, found at any pet store, grocery store, local corner store, you really think bird seed is that hard find and millets not? ermmm..) which is a whole grain (or a bunch of them) and the PF Tek contain Brown Rice Flour...also a grain. Also found at grocery stores so plenty easy to get. Not that I suggest it.. but WBS is harder to use them millet? They're like the same exact thing man..

should have been more clear....

i personally find it easier to get proper water content in the finch seed than in rye or wbs, also the tiny peices make growth start from everywhere when used as spawn

If you meant me, I wasnt responding to you..I know what you were saying...I can't compare finch seed since I've never used it been seeing it come up though so maybe I should..probably some in my WBS anyways. My above comments were made in reference to the other post about grains being easier to work with and find then WBS or BRF..

i like rye over WBS, but WBS is so easy to find. Rye really isn't as hard to use as people think it is.

rye is easy to use if you know how to cook.

the whole advantage that rye has over wbs is its ability to hold more water. That being said, you are giving your mushrooms a better water source when using rye. i've had plenty of experience with both wbs and rye and have to say that rye is my favorite. The mycelium just looks so much healthier and robust. Even for spawning, I know many of you are going to disagree with me, but I have found that rye works better for spawning than millet based wbs. Sure, wbs may have more "inoculation" points, but I've found that rye-spawned grows have shown faster mycelial recovery after spawning than wbs.

If you can find rye, you're set. Its worth the extra effort.
