I like to let them mature more than most people but these things are huge. Gotta love the KSS strain.

Why is it a waste of nutrients?

diminishing returns on active components, as I understand it.

Considering that these are from the 5th flush..I think all is going well. It all works out in the end anyway. Picking early results in smaller fruits and I still, as of yet, have experienced no difference in potency between smaller(before the veil tears) fruits and more mature ones but I know it's a matter of belief and preference.

Ahh I re-thought it. It may not be diminishing returns on active components, rather "bang for the buck" on yields.

So in English, the bigger your shrooms get, the more nutrients they require, or in the scope of the whole fruiting process, the more they "hog" - AND at is disproportionate rate. So they take up for nutes than small ones (duh), but yield far less actual weight for the amount of resources they consumed. Or something like that

Now in your case, you are right..no matter what is happening. If you are on your 5th flush, you are doing something right - and at that point, don't need to worry about this shroom hogging nutes, and the next ones not getting very big.

Nice.

Stamets notes that picking mushrooms when they are immature will effect total yields in a negative way. Think of it like this: it takes much more nutrients and work to start a new mushroom off than it takes to mature an existing one. Also, when the caps start to "plane out" and get flat, the tissue actually displaces from the center outwards, giving the illusion of a massive growth spurt. The stems sometimes stretch during this period, becoming more hollow but longer. It is at this moment when sporulation has begun, and the cap starts to plane out (slightly after the veil tears) when the mushrooms should be harvested for yield...

Are you sure about this? I though Stamets said that if you pick early bloomers immature when still small the rest of the energy will go to the rest of the flush and make a difference positivly in yeilds?

Yes. and Yes.

Page 57 of GGMM states:
Quote:

"Biological efficiency depends upon the stage of mushrooms at harvest. Young mushrooms ("buttons") are generally more delectable and store better. Yet if the entire crop is picked as buttons, a substantial loss in yield occurs. Mature mushrooms, on the other hand, may give the cultivator maximum biological efficiency, but also a crop with very short shelf life and limited maketability."

You are also correct about picking early bloomers. Typically there are a few mushrooms that are significantly larger than the others when you have the initial pinset (which usually mature much faster). It is at this time he recommends you should pick these "early bloomers" so the pinset will develop evenly. I always pick these premature pins, usually they make good clone candidates...

Well shit thanks for popping my balloon. Feels like Lit class. Somehow, one can never look "deep" enough into those fucking poems to get the class discussion answers right. Ahh well. Live and learn...learn...seems to be the key
