PF formulas confusion
    #371460 - 08/14/01 02:50 AM (23 years, 3 months ago)

I've noticed that quite a few different formulas are around for PF style cakes.

PF's original works out at: 4:2:1.5 verm:BRF:water
PF max fruit works out at 2:1:1
MMGG works out at 2.7:1:1

MF recently the PF original and it looks very dry in the jars. Is that other people's experience too? What formula is best?

>What formula is best?
Depends on the vermiculite and the BRF.
I use 120 ml vermiculite,
45 ml BRF and
app. 45 ml water
When preparing the substrate, do it this way:
Put the required amount of vermiculite in a bowl(NOT for each jar separately!). Use a spatula or spoon to mix in enough water to make the vermiculite about as damp as it can be without feeling soggy, mix well. (A small puddle, very small, should form at the bottom of the bowl when tilting the bowl). Then add the appropriate amount of BRF and mix together. The idea is to coat the wet vermiculite particles with the dry powder as you stir the mix with the spatula. This sounds trivial but it makes all the difference.

Thx

That works out the same as the MMGG formula.

BTW, after reading your posts enthusing about Polyfill, I decided to go buy some. I couldn't find the Polyfill brand but was sold some polyester filling as essentially the same thing. It comes in a bag and looks a bit like a large ball of cotton wool. Is that the same stuff? Do I just stuff the 1/4" hole with as much as I can?

Yes.
> Do I just stuff the 1/4" hole with as much as I can?
Ai make a relatively compressed wad measuring about 1 in in diameter and force it through the hole halfway through.
I make the hole using a philipps screwdriver and a hammer from the top, this gives me some teeth pointed to the inside of the jar that help holding the wad in place. But drilling a hole works equally good, the first is just more convenient...

The formula some of my elves use is the one you referr to as 'pf max'...I call it 'max max'!

My elves mix the flour and verm first then add the water. This works fine, they never have problems.

i dont use the pf formula, but what i used was 1/2 cup verm (the smaller stuff) 1/4 water (tap even works) and 1/8 cup brf. i need to do some math, but i think the ratio would be: 4:2:1? verm:water:brf. i thought that it was extremely easy to remember.

Then your elves should once try the method I use, they will wonder what difference this makes.
