casing

Would it be a good or bad idea to mix in some birdfeed over crumbed cakes in a casing, and if so should i put a thin layer of the bird seed followed by the coco fiber or wait till the birdseed layer is colonized then add coco fiber.

looking something like this:

coco fiber
----------------
birdseed
----------------
crumbled cakes
----------------
perlite(mcman says he prefers perlite as a bottom casing layer i believe)

Bad idea, birdseed will most likely contaminate.

The whole point of a casing layer is as a NON-nutritious means of water delivery...If you use birdseed, I give it a week at most before contams..

The main casing materials that fit this criteria are vermiculite, peat humus, coco fibre, worm castings or a combination thereof...and even then I recommend a sterile procedure..
