Casing and pinning strategy?
    #3713182 - 02/01/05 11:26 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I have about 3.5" of colonized bulk substrate ready to be cased. I am going to be casing it with 1" or so of straight verm.

Now for the casing layer I know that we don't want the entire layer colonized. Here is where I have 3 questions:

1) I'm pretty sure casing with straight verm is ok. But, is using this as opposed to involving peat moss, coir, and/or calcium carbonate so far from ideal that it'd be worth finding money I don't have to get them? (I'm really broke, in debt in fact, and I have the verm)

2) How deep below the surface should I allow the myc to reach before I initiate pinning with my ~1" casing layer?

3) Let the answer to my first question be represented by X.
Why not initially apply the casing layer at a depth of ~1" - X, allow that to fully colonize, then proceed to "patch" the entire surface with X amount of verm?
To me I see a major advantage of an even surface and colonization rate (though the rate is actually irrelevant, the surface is just evenly colonized), therefore permitting the chance of a much better pin set. Though I do not see any apparent disadvantages, the rule is typically for me, that any short cuts I find have most likely been thought out before and weighed as a negative.

1. DEFINITELY!! use a mix verm/coir will improve yields considerably!
2. 1" is more than necessary for a 3.5 substrate cut it down to half that to 5/8". You'll want the myc to break the surface then check with a clean fork in random areas and confirm the myc in just about to break through if not patch the areas for a day or two while continuing to incubate. Then initiate making sure that casing is near saturation up to the time of initiating pinning.
3. Waste of precious time and mycelium energy.

What about peat moss, is that a viable substitute for coir? I shopped around today and couldn't find any coir. I will order some offline for next time around, but this needs to be done tonight. Should I use a mix of peat moss and verm instead of straight verm? Does that carry any significant advantages?

If you use peat and verm, you could just use Jiffy mix. Alot of people claim to have success with peat.
But it would be worth it to try to find some coir, 1st choice-garden shop, 2nd choice- pet shop.

I use peat and verm (I think Id rather use 100% peat then 100% verm)
About 4:1 ratio. Added about 1/10 crushed oyster shells, peat is rather acid, needs more calcium then coco coir.

I grew this on that casing:

An unpatched casing layer, just to rescue some mushrooms from the green mold.

And this GT:

And this (Orissa on straw/poo) casing was put in fruiting chamber today:

Ok, well I went out and got some peat moss. I mixed up a 50/50 batch of peat/verm. NOW, how about the advantages of having crushed oyster shell, can anyone attest to this?

Do a quick search on coco coir, it will describe the pH adjustment

Peat based is my casing of preference, I believe it has a superior microclimate to coir IME. When using peat based casing mixes (50/50+) I recommend using 1tsp. hydrated lime (short term buffer) per qt. of mix along with 1 tsp.-1tbs. egg/oystershell, lime, calcium carbonate (long term buffers) for optimum results. So would you all claim that a pH buffer is super necessary? I didn't get around to doing it last night.

I know that some lime can easily burn my myc. What is the lime that I can add as much as I want and it'll still be safe?

With peat based casings it is basically required (but you may get fruits without it, I did once).

That would be calcium carbonate, or crushed limestone.

coco coir craves different treatment cause its less acid then peat.

Anno once said in peat use 10% oystershells. (crushed  )

Buffering is not essential if your only going for a couple of flushes. 10% is way more than necessary! 1tbs. MAX per qt. of casing is more than enough. Also I'll alway suggest hydrated to raise initial pH of the peat making more better suited for massive pinning besides a long term buffer. GL

I use something like garden calcium and was adviced to use 1 part at 10 parts peat/verm.

Which makes 10%,  which gave me good fruits.... And which will give me multiple flushes, I hope...

Staying o/t, this is why I decided to go with coir right off the bat.
I'm sure that if you say peat is a better microenvironment, I believe you.
But I am not advanced to that point yet, and I don't know if I can get all the ingredients.
I haven't even found oyster shell for sure yet (someone says it was on the order sheet)
Would egg shells get me started?

OK, I went out and got some "pulverised limestone." It is 93% calcium carbonate. I mixed in about 6 cups or so into a 4 gallon mixture. I cooked it for an hour at 250 degrees.
I'm going to spread it about 3/4" thick over my colonized bulk.
1) How long should I wait after casing to check to see if it's ready to be patched?
2) How many times should I patch?
3) Would it be a good idea to dig out a very small "indicator hole," about a 1/4-1/8" thick to see the status of the myc?

2-3 days. Should be ready then too but might take a few days later depending on factors

2) How many times should I patch?
As many as it takes to get an even layer..Id say no more then 3 but if you did it right (even casing and first patch) it should take you zero or one patch.

3) Would it be a good idea to dig out a very small "indicator hole," about a 1/4-1/8" thick to see the status of the myc?
No. If you can't see the myc, that is the status of it. When the status of the myc is you can see it without digging a hole..then thats what the status is and its time to patch.

How much of a difference is there between ready-to-be-fruited status, overlay, and 100% colonization of the casing layer?

I also have another question. I just read this article, which might I add is magnificent, and it got me worried.
http://www.mycosupply.com/techniques/watering%20mushroom%20crop.pdf

It talks about how to water and how important watering is as to not seal the casing. If watering with too large of water droplets can induce such negative consequences, it makes me think that the initial application of the casing is pretty important. Should the casing layer be fluffed and completely "unchunked"? What are some tips of the best way to apply and set the structure of your casing layer?

field capacity- when you squeeze your mix tight in your hand it should trinkle some water out.... my friend always mists his casing a bit mroe the first 3 days in fruiting chamber...after that only as needed and when you do mist up and let the droplets fall onto the casing...

Yea, I now understand the watering to a pretty good extent. What I am concerned with now is the potential danger is sealing my casing right off the bat by applying it too densely.

Get a Multi Purpose Pump Sprayer such as this one. Adjust it so you get an extremely fine mist then mist from a distance lightly. Several light mistings are best as opposed to one heavy misting which can "pan" the casings surface. The casing should just glisten with moisture with no puddling or run off. Remember mushrooms love an extremely wet environment not a saturated one. You do not want to change the casings surface structure with forceful waterings. GL

im just trying to under stand this right now

ok you got to the casing point after you colinized what ever it was that you colinised and then you went out and got potasium carbinate (crushed limestone(where can i find that??)) and then you used a 50/50 verm and coir ... (how should i sterilize this mixture 5 mins in microwave??) and how much should you use if you only have 4 half pint jars colinized on popcorn?

im just soo lost its madness ... im trying the copout way by buying mycobags. anyone know what the yeild is for a small mycobag (dried) as in 1/8 1/4 1/2 i still havent figured out the metric system all i know about grams is 4.5 is an 1/8?? then that would make 9.0 a fourth and 18 an half RIGHT???? im still new to this whole system.

anywas back to this topic you took your mixture and added powederd egg shell to it? do you just mix it in with the main mixture or do you put it on top... what do you patch with...

austin

What I need to know is how delicate I have to be when INITIALLY applying the casing layer. Is there much danger of the casing being sealed because I handled it wrong or packed it too dense?

I thought it would just contam or what ever but i got a damn nice first flush ....its on a 3rd flush now and doing very good with nada contamination ...Regular fanning was all i did
I put maybe 2 qt jars of substrate and have harvested maybe 20 dry grams allready ...Im gonna do some more this way
