1/2 pint VS 1 pint
    #371212 - 08/13/01 04:41 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

I am working with a friend on this and he has some 1 pint jars that he really wants to use. I read that the smaller 1/2 pint jars will colonize quicker. But he says "bigger is better." I was thinking we could use more 1/2 pint jars and that way we would get more quicker, i guess that's the whole idea. But are there any other advantages/disadvantages to using the 1/2 or 1 pint jars? Or is it just the colonization time advantage?
THANK YOU

if you're worried about time, go for the 1/2 pt. , if you've got a load of innoculate then use the 1 pt jars. they take a bit more innoculate, and if you skimp on the innoculate for them I've found that contams take over much more easily in the 1 pt jars. I guess the concept is that the quicker the mycelia grows the lesser the chance a contam will take over.

peace out!

I am currently growing my own batch of P. Cubensis using 1 pint jars. They will work fine, but if I were you I would use as much inoculate per jar as you could get away with (if you choose to use 1 pint jars). Over 1/2 cc per hole if possible. Otherwise contamination will get a foothold because it takes longer for the mycelium to grow. Also be sure to wipe the rims REAL clean before you add the dry vermiculite shield. That's how I lost four of my jars, because I didn't clean them properly.

To be honest, I think you should go with the 1/2 pints if possible. The faster the mycelium colonizes the lower the chance that any contaminate will gain a foothold. Plus you don't waste as many supplies (mainly spores) if they do become contaminated.

By they way, use either PF Tek or MMGG. Steer clear of crappy teks like Shroom Wizard's Guide. I wasted many months and spent money on multiple syringes for that pile o' shit tek. I'm sorry, but it had to be said. I think many others will agree.

Good luck!

my suggestion is to use 1/2 pint jars if using spore syringes.
use pint jars if you have honey water or VERY dark syringes...

If you use pint jars give it at least 1 month to colonize. Im waiting on NSP filter disks to start another batch to see if that will speed things up a bit. My last (and first) batch of 12 pt. camby jars I lost 4 to contams that was OK considering it was my first attempt it was the waiting for the jars to fully colonize that drove me fuckin nuts. If I had the choice I would go with the 1/2 pt jars.

Tell me something good then I might agree with you..
