Freaky Fungi???
    #3712167 - 02/01/05 09:27 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Ok so i have a cake going that had the whitest of white primidora.  I looked in on it the other day and the pins looked kind of scaley, kinda like snake skin.  As the pins developed most are very oddly shaped and some caps even resemble a shrawberry (texture wise) and others have faint brown lines along there stems.  I know a pic would help but my camera is lent out.  I'm guessing some type of bacteria?  But my main concern is are they still edible?  And if not would the following flushes be contamed?  The only thing is the cake looks great?  Fluffy white and still hasn't dried up?  Oh yeah specs:::  EQ, pf tek, 2nd flush, air bubbler running under surface of perlite with a tropic aire attatched for air excange?  Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

You really need to post some pics and let the experts (not me) take a look. I wouldn't risk my health on eating a possibly contam'd shroom. Just get a good pic on here and you'll have answers.

Excerpt from one of my textbooks:
Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched.
I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.

i have the pins of my second flush right now, and they are white just like the first time. i posted a question similar to yours and the guys answered that they were albinos or mutants, but when they grew up they got their head brown as normal. (look for my "white headed primordia" thread). my personal theory is that cambodians have white pins in particular ambient conditions, and everything is ok if they turn brown as they grow.

Sounds like verticillium to me. Other sypmtoms include deformed caps and dark spots on the cap surface. Sometimes the stems may split or the caps will open prematurely...

Vericillium is said to be harmless, although I personally would not eat them...

Verticillium sp. commonly occur in the soil which may be a primary source of the infection, however, it is more likely that they come with casing or by transfer of infection from house to house by pickers, flies or machinery. Spores can lie dormant until they come into contact with mushroom mycelium which stimulates them to grow.
Because the spores are sticky the disease is spread on dust particles from the movement of earth or spent compost. This dust can contaminate fresh casing, or can enter through fans or doorways or be carried in by flies, pickers or even mites.
The disease within the production house can be spread by water splash. The spores can also be spread on any other equipment used in an infected growing house. Appearance of the disease at pin head formation signifies infection at an early stage of development, probably at the time of casing. Development of the disease at later stages of the production cycle usually indicates infection has occurred from other cropping houses or from outside sources.
Spread by water, flies and pickers can result in 30% of the crop being infected at the third flush and by the last flush virtually all of the crop.
The highest standards of hygiene are essential for the control of Verticillium. Other methods of control are as follows:

From the link I previously posted...

And I looked it up more...says nothing about it harming you but I'm not sure on what you should do.....but they looked pretty gruesome to me....good luck on what you choose, but i think a trips not worth dying over...well...getting sick or something like anyways....PM jaughingjim, he knows a lot of molds and things of that nature, i'm sure that he could give you a striaght anwser...gl
