simple thoughts on sterilization.
    #3711930 - 02/01/05 06:50 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

i know pressure cookers are damn expensive, so most of us have to steam our way to disinfection.

now i have also heard of microwaving your pf jars for ten minutes or slightly less, and seeing how microwave temperatures are much more higher than boiling water, why not combine both? like for duel safety measures?

let's say, do the regular steaming, and afterwards put your jars in the microwave in a tray of water.

perhaps since there is alot of heat involved, you should add a very slight amount of more water in the pf jars than what is usual before even sterilizing; that way the water won't evaporate too much with all the heat bombing.

i'm sure someone has thought of this.

yr moisture content could also easily get screwed up in such a drawn out process.
when i was a newb i bought a $40 pc at wal-mart just to get my feet wet
that was one of the best purchases i've ever made. I reccomend it to you, it will save you much time in the long run.
sorry if this doesn't answer yr question that much.

If you microwave water, or anything that contains fluid water for that matter, the temperature can get only as high as the boiling temperature of water at atmospheric pressure, which is 212?F.

anno's right, the temp won't go above 212 until all the water is gone

So a microwave will not be sufficient for proper sterilization?

Correct.
A microwave can be a substitution for boiling in a pot, if done right, but never for pressure cooker sterilization.

Well, I don't have a PC (and neither do my parents) so I was going to have to go with the boiling in a pot method anyways.

Do you know the process of sterilization in the micro?

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7950

Note, this only works for PF substrate.

It is important that you always have some water where the jars are.
Also, it the jars have metal lids , the microwaves won't penetrate the jars from where the lids are.

All in all, a pot beats the microwave.

Thanks for the link, but after you pre-sterilize the containers, it doesn't say how long you sterilize the packed containers. I assume you do it for another 8 minutes?

Go to your local thrift store/Salvation Army store and buy a PC. They always have a 4 to 6 qt one for around 8$ to 10$. It is worth the time to get a PC.

If getting a PC is too much trouble, a pot works just fine. A ton of people use just pots on here, nothing special. I used just a pot, with a rag in the bottom, and low boiled with lid on for an hour and a half. I've boiled a total of 12 jars, and not a single one has contams yet and it's been about 3 weeks. I didn't boil one just to see what would happen, and in less than a week it was completely covered with cobweb mold. Now, after 3 weeks, it's got lipstick mold taking over too. The pot tek works just fine, so don't hesitate to use it. If you're trying to do the microwave tek to speed things up, that's a real bad idea. It's not proven to be that good of a tek, and you're only saving yourself about an hour's worth of time. Considering it's going to take a good month or two to complete the process of growing your first batch of mushrooms, an hour and a half of doing it the right way (a pot) versus 10 minutes of doing it a somewhat right way (microwave) is insignificant. The only time a PC is really required is if you're doing whole grains (bird seed, rye, popcorn, etc.) Regular brown rice flour sterilizes just fine in a pot.

Excerpt from one of my textbooks:
Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched.
I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.
