If a cop pulls you over, can you shine a spotlight back into his Eyes?

I was just wondering if this was legal. I hate when you get pulled over at 2am on a saturday night and the cop asks you why you squint when he shines that fucking 50 watt flashlight into your eyes. Well, is it illegal to shine one right back into his face when he comes over to your car? If he asks you to turn it off, would you be breaking the law if you didnt?

What the fuck is the point of fucking with cops? Are you still in high school? Pissing off cops will do no good. Cops will always have something to fuck you with. They can bring you in for 24 hours if they feel like it.

Im actually just outta highschool and if I dont have anything on me and not doing anything illegal, I wouldnt mind fuckin with a cop like they fuck with us all the time. Besides, I was just asking the question on a legal basis....not asking you whether or not I should do it.

There is a 90% chance a cop can finding something off with your car. Could be as small as something hanging from your rear view mirror (illegal). And if he can't, he can take you in for anything that makes him feel threatened. If shining a flash light constitutes as a threat to him, you're spending the night in jail.
If I pulled over some kid and they shinned a flashlight at me, I'd pistol whip them.

just a side note, if that ever happens when you're stoned or tripping or drunk (dont drive drunk), make sure you squint when they shine that light. It's a little test they do. People who are fucked up will usually not quint when the light is shined, but sober people will.
Now you know.
... and knowing is half the battle!

Illegal? Yes, no, maybe so, but probably not. Will the cop let it slide regardless? doubtful.

It?s kinda weird how everyone thinks this is a definite ticket to the slammer. What a cop interprets as ?threatening? can be anything between making a hand movement a bit faster then he?s comfortable with or pulling out a pocket knife too pry open your glove box or even saying ?FUCKING BULLSHIT? when he takes 2 hours outta your day to write up a ticket for having some car freshener hanging from the rear view mirror. I was not really suggesting the notion to whoop out a spotlight as soon as he pulls me over and shove it in his face. I was thinking more along the lines of taking out a flashlight while rummaging through my glove box to help me look for my paperwork, then when he asks, why are you squinting, as he blinds me with that high powered beam ?, Ill nonchalantly point my light towards him?. just to give the asshole a direct taste of his own medicine. It?s true, being a hostile idiot and cursing off a cop while aggressively and physically threatening his life would definitely increase your chances of getting taken in?.but then again, sucking his cock would probably decrease your chances. I guess I lie somewhere in between. I didn?t think this was such an outlandish stupid thought?.but maybe I?m just immature.

First off, that's a bad idea. Cops have guns, don't put them on the defensive. They're just people doing a job. Treat them with respect, and enforce your rights. SHining a flashlight in their face is not respectful. If you want to avoid the problem, put on your interior lights before they make it to the car so they have full visibility.
Spud: I think the holding time without being charged (i KNOW it is in michigan) is up to 72 hours. Bastards held me for 71 hours once, just to ruin my weekend.

Gotta love those mornings. One day, a few years ago, when the substance was around in force, i accidently ate just about 2/3rds of a vial.
Needless to say i was a tad more careful about dosing after that.
All these people talking about acid.....i'm going to keep my eyes open.

Ah, cop released my friend after 24 because he said he couldn't hold him longer. Maybe it varies state to state?
Disrespecting cops is idiotic. I've gave nothing but respect to cops and in return I have never had a ticket. I've even talked myself out of a 120mph ticket.

Yes try it! I want to know what happens myself...I remember throwing apples and snowballs at cop cars and other cars when I was in high school...I remember a few times the cops got out of thier car and started chasing us on foot.. of course we outran them, we just took shortcuts through peoples yards, and got away every time...

If you want to hear my story, I state my case below, its a long read so be ready:
I would not generally disrespect cops. As of last week, I have been pulled over 4 times since I started driving. From those 4 times of gettin pulled over, I only got a single speeding ticket which even though I was only goin 15 miles over, I can see that I deserved and "justice was served". Well, this past TUesday (last week), I lost the respect that I once had for cops when one decided to pull me over on accouts of suspicion. First off, I go to a technical school that has hours throughout the night. My recording/mixing console test was at 11pm sharp so I left my house at 1030 to be on time since this testout is pretty much half of our grade wheree we ahve to sit behind a $500,000 peice of euipment (amek9081) patch it op with all the outborad gear, aquiure signal etc....its a test. Well, I was pulled over under the grounds of "suspicion" Since I was a kid driving around on a Friday night in a college town. I was totally cooperative trying to get out my insurance blinded by the goodam light he was shinning in my eyes. He kept insisting I was under the influece since I couldnt whoop out my registration and everything else in the matter of seconds. He gave me a breathalizer and a field sobriety test---- then he asked if he could search my car. I gave him full consent to search my vehicle requesting he takes no more than 10 mins since I have to take an exam. (I even showed him my schedule)----he innsistelny mocked me and musicians in general saying how we were drugies as he continued to blind me with that GOddam flashlight and try and get me to confess that I actually had something hidden. Well, He tore the back panels off the front seats looking for drugs etc...(I can show you pics if you dont believe me.) this is a lincoln LS and the damage (if reparired) is in the hundreds. I ended up staying there for bout 2 hours before he finally let me go---I think it was around 12:45. I rushed to school where of course the studios were closed up and teahers were gone. Since being stopped by a cop is not "an excused absense" there is a chance I can fail this class unless I work out sommething with a student advisor----even then, I will have to pay a few hundred dollars in studio time and an enginner instructor on location to grade the test!!!! So I filed a complaint which basically gets baried underneath a pile of files and doesnt get any recognition....this is what stirred up my anger towards cops. Im not one of those teenage "I hate authority kids" I have no problems with cops generally speaking..... and acting out somethingg like in that video would be obsurd.... but I do have a problem with officers abusing there authority....Since the whole 2 hours he had that flashlight on my face, I raised the question of whether or not it would be legal to reverse the favor since I really cant do anything else which will have an effect. By th way, if all studio slots are filled up, I will ahve to pay $2800 to take the course over again. Did I mention I got a ticket for not putiong on my signal when pulling of to the side of the road----Ill scan that for you too if you dont believe me....$112
So add that all up and it will be atleast $600 thrown out the window. Can you see why I am pissed now? Can you see why I would consider disrespecting a cop if he disrespected me to this extent?....

After you passed the breathalyzer and soberiety test, you should have asked him if you were under arrest. And if you weren't you should have gone to your test. you mistake in this matter was allowing him to take your time. He satisfied his immediate suspicions, and you should NEVER let ANYONE search your person or property for ANY reason unless they have a warrent.
EVER.
You could have broken that off with no where near the waste of time you had.
I'm sorry, but you are as much to blame as the police officer for NOT enforcing YOUR rights. They will never do it for you.

Thats why I said, "I dont have a problem with cops is general"....and even then, cops are a part of an organization that is based on principles. In a state of anger, I can say as of right now, I have a problem with COPS but thats probably just because Im still pissed off----I can get specific and say Officer (OFE BTIN????---a sig??? badge number 4550. In my book, simce officer #4550 works for the Orlando state Police, then I hold the prescint responsiblle for his actions.

After reading your story I find several things you did that would prolong the stop.
#1) You should tell the cop upfront that you are in a hurry because of exams. #2) when he asked to search the vehicle you should have told him "I do not have time to let you search my vehicle. I have to get to my exam." #3) After 5 minuets you should have asked him if you can leave. If he said "No" you would follow it with the question "Am I under arrest?" #4) If it went on any longer that 10 minuets you should have stated that you have other engagements and must be on your way. If he still is giving you a hard time and not letting you go to class you should have asked that his shift supervisor be called to the seen so that you can voice a formal objection of this detainment to his superior.
DO NOT PISS A COP OFF!
They have a list of ways to haul you in. For example, In my state they can take you in if your car is not preceded by a man carrying a red flag. This law is from the early 1900's there are 100's of traffic laws like that still on the books. They can and will haul you in for crap like that. Will it stick? No, Will it get thrown out of court? Yes. But they have just wasted at least 24 to 48 hours of your time.

I was mistaken in giving this officer the benefit of the doubt that he would keep to a gentlemens agreement to be swift in searching my car???? Ive heard, especiallly if you have nothing to hide, then give the officer the right to search your vehicle. An officer in the past asked to search my car before and when I agreed, he just looked in the glove box, pushed a few things around and let me go with a "be safe" I assumed the same would apply this time around but I was wrong. I have heard of people refusing the right to search which evidentally raises an officers suspicion--holding you there until a dog comes out thatts barkin his ass off to give them probably cause. I was wrong for not protecting my rights? Holy shit--an officer from my point of view has authority over me.....he should'nt be abusing my rights....I shouldnt have to be put in a position where I have to protect myself. "To protect and Serve"???? is that there motto or something?

You had places to be. If you aren't immediately placed under arrest upon you asking "am i under arrest" than you are free to go. Be polite but firm. JUST SAY NO.
The police are not your friend, they are not pulling you over to help you, they believe that you have commited a crime and are attempting to prove that. They will do anything they can to prove that, and are trained to AVOID you using your rights. In my experience (of which i have too much) any interaction with a LEO in which you are polite and display a good knowledge of your rights and your ability to act on them makes the LEO very professional.....i.e. they stop fucking around trying to find something you've done wrong.
As much as i hate to say it, they move onto easier prey.

Well now I know to put up my defenses next time Im stopped by a cop...I have never been in a situation like this and ahve always believed that a cops purpose or atleast intentions are to proetect and serve. And I did tell the cop I was in a hurry....I showed him my schudle that said "RMC" TestOut at 11:00.....he disregarded it. I thought, at the time, he would realize I was not hiding anything when I let him go through my stuff but instead he took advantage of that opportunity to sabotage my belongings and miss my test.

The kids who were bullies in high school are the kids who grow up to be cops. Bullies are not mean to everyone, they are only mean to a few. Cops are like this. Even a cop who is not a bully to everyone will bully some.
Never give a cop permission to do anything. If you give him permission to search your car all he has to do is drop some drugs somewhere and then say he found them there. Cops do this, the same way a bully might place a porno in your desk only to go "That kid has a porno" and get you in trouble in school.
Are all cops bad? Almost without exception. Even those who do not directly abuse their power often enable those who do, by ignoring reports, lying, covering up, etc.
