HUMIDITY TOO HIGH!! Perlite too much??
    #371093 - 08/13/01 11:56 AM (23 years, 5 months ago)

I have three pantyhose(15"long 3"dia) filled with perlite sitting in the bottom of my terrarium. I had half the depth of the perlite filled with water, but the humidity was too high so I drained most of it out. There is no standing water in the bottom, just absorbed into the perlite. Now the humidity is still too high and I would like to heat my terrarium a little which will only compound the problem. Any suggestions on how to get the humidity down so I can put my casings in there?

Fan more often or add a fish pump and put it over the cased cakes not pointing it at the cakes just below the cover pointing up and 1 of these will work

Yep I would figga a way to introduce more gas/air exchange, you might consider just cracking open the lid a bit until some of the humidity has a chance to escape. Im not sure if or how much this might leave you exposed to possible contams. If you added H2O2 to your perlite that definitely helps protect against contams. Anyone disagree with this?

take 2 of the panty hose out. I just recently gave up using so much perlite..
I just have a small tray with about a half a cup of perlite sitting in the chamber,
seems to be just enough. I add just alittle water when humidity starts going down now.
that's my 2 cents

I've come to the same conclusion. I'll just take one or two of the pantyhose out. Atleast I don't have to clean out the bottom of the terrarium. The only way to keep the humidity down is to keep the lid cracked and thats not an acceptable risk to take. Thanks all for your input.

How can one tell if their humidity is too high? I don't have the money for a gauge at this point. That's why I'm wondering if my humidity is too high. My set is as follows: 2" layer of wet perlite with 1/3" of water on the bottom in an airtight red and white plastic cooler that is airtight. I have fanned the cakes 5 times a day for the past two days. I have also let them get 1 hour of light a day with the cooler shut by placing a flashlight in there. The temp in between the high seventies and the low 80s give or take. Anyway, how can I tell if the humidification is too much? Thanks!

How big is your cooler? How long have your cakes been birthing and what stage are your cakes in, what do they look like? How much condensation is on the sides of your cooler?, is it light or can you see water droplets running down the sides?

Actually my friend is the one growing. He said that the cooler is 12" (without the lid) 16" across and 10" wide. Today is the third day the cakes have been in their. I was wrong, he is giving them 2-3 hours of light a day via flashlight. He has small drops of water on the sides of the cooler, but non on the top that or else they are very small (he has vasoline on the top). The cakes have fluffy mycelium all over them and they have what look like rope strands that are about the size of a pin, but they have no cap and are all white and are in one piece. By one piece, I mean they don't have stands of mycelium on them, they are coming out of gnarls of mycelium. Are these very young pins or what? Thanks!

Sounds like everything is fine, those rope strands are a sign of strong mycelium growth called "roping", enjoy...
