Preserving cakes and syringe
    #3709617 - 01/31/05 09:09 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

For instance, if I make 6 jars, and only use 5 cakes to grow, is it possible to preserve the extra cake? I doubt this would happen but I was just curious.

Also, if I dont use the whole spore syringe, will it hurt it if I kept it for a while after only using like say, half of it?

Hey

You can keep the leftover jar in cool temps above freezing for long term storage. Anywhere from 35-50 works fine. The mycelium can lose vitality if stored too long-the sooner it's used the better.

As for the syringe, the remaining can be kept in the fridge or at room temperature for a long time until you need it again. Personally, I've had syringes at room temp work perfect a year later.

Have fun

It sounds like he means that only 5 were inoculated to me. I wouldn't want to leave a cake around if you didn't, its asking for trouble.

Diver is right about the syringes. Just keep em in the dark.

Well i'm saying all 6 jars were to be fully cultured, but I save one to use at like a later date. Would it work down the road?

Obviously this woulnd't be the case, seeing as I would only make as many jars as needed. But speaking hypothetically.

yeaah dude. keeping something fully conlinzed in the fridge is ok. i keep my master jar for grian to grian transfers capped tight and wrapped in tin foil in my veggie crisper draw. its been there about a month and i used it last week and the jars i inoculated seem to be ok and are growing fast.
