Rush,
Those "black" ones are actually covered in purple spore. I left town and they fully matured and dropped spore all over themselves/eachother by the time i returned. You usually dont let them open that much.

I have been seeing this mentioned(about the spores dropping) and haven't really found any info in the FAQ's about it. Is it bad for them to drop? And, what happens when they drop(fertilization, etc)?

Nothing happens when they drop...I always let mine open up fully. I try to get it right beofre they drop but 80% of the time I dont. It just a big purple mess everywhere...

The rye was colonized in 10 qt jars. It was soaked for 24hrs, then simmered 30, then PC'd and inocd and colonized. It was then scooped out onto a bottom layer of verm/coir caing in the tub, then topped with another layer of casing.

you think something like this could be achieved in the same tub outdoors? with constant care..misting/fanning...and a hole in the bottom with polyfill?
provided the temperatures are about 70+ degrees
