First grow, with pics, and questions
    #3708272 - 01/31/05 05:50 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

First of all, THANK YOU to anyone who provides constructive comments with regard to this post. This community is fantastic and I hope that I can contribute something meaningful to it in the future.

Apparently one of the spore syringes I used was contaminated because EVERY jar I inoculated with it turned green, whereas every jar I inoculated with the other syringe is showing at least some healthy growth and no contamination. All the jars were sterilized at the same time, so that wasn't the problem. Anyway, onto the questions...

Here is a picture of the healthy jars:

-The black at the bottom of jar 1 is just because I burned the jar.
-It may be hard to tell but jars 4, 5, and 6 have considerable growth inside the substrate, although it has not spread too much to the sides of the jar. For some reason the substrate in those jars has a lot of empty space in it and the colonization is substantial inside.
-I used the "Simple Cubensis Growing Technique" and followed the directions EXACTLY, except I neglected to use any form of heating (stupid mistake)
-The jars were inoculated on December 24, and I believe that they are taking so long to colonize because the average ambient temperature has been too low

My questions are as follows:
1. Am I right that temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees can slow growth to such a degree?
2. Why are the jars, which were inoculated at the same time, showing such radical differences in their speed of growth, and is this normal?
3. Should I birth the cakes now or wait longer? What signs should I look for to birth them? Is it enough if the inside of the substrate is very colonized but the outsides are as shown?

I will definitely get some kind of heating pad or device for the next batch. Of course these are all legal gourmet mushrooms that I am growing.

Thank you!

60-70 degrees is wayyy too low it will slow them down. Try to keep the temp around 80. You birth the cakes when it is fully collinized with the mycelium. You should also dunk your cakes. Hope that helped

Umm...I don't want to bring you down....But DAMN....Those all look contamed...I bet they smell rather funky...
Mycelium=Health WHITE.
For some reason most of my pf cakes look the same way...contamed...donno why to be honest...i traced back all my steps and the only anwsered i've found is the syringe being contamed...
Where did you get your syringes from?

Yah - they wil grow, but very, very slow. Even MORE if your going from warn to cold often - the myc gets a little shock. Myc likes constant temps.

This might have to do with temps I would say and spores per innoc location. Mayble settling of the substrate, overly dry/wet spots. Noteing your jars got hot enough to cook the inside it might be a possiblity.

If they are not 100% colonized when you birth to cakes, parts of your nutritive substrate are exposed to contames ie. BRF. If they got some nasty contams and you have no choice, then I would carve out the healthy stuff and case it.

I would get your temps up, and bout three days after that your myc should start going again. You want a speedy colonization - longer parts of jars sit there uncolonized, other invaders could take root.

"I will definitely get some kind of heating pad or device for the next batch. Of course these are all legal gourmet mushrooms that I am growing."

That should help. Look into a TiT and a heatbomb. Though I only know about growing Ps. Cubensis. This should help.

Hello

You CAN incubate at 70F. BUT if you want quicker colonisation you need to incubate at higher temperatures.

Ideal = 82-86F.

Birth the cakes when fully colonized.

Speed of growth, hard to say, did you shake the syringe? Maybe substrate in one of the jars different (more packed or something). Every jar is unique....

Rais temps.

Thanks. Should I wait until the mycelium completely covers the inside of the jars before birthing them? Also sorry to be a newb but what is a TiT? I've seen this abbreviation before but obviously searching google for it is going to bring up the wrong results...

TiT stands for Tub-in-Tub. There are a few variations on the idea, here's a link to the one I'm using. Pretty neat idea.

1. yes your temps are wayyyyy to low I personally prefet to incubate my jars/bags between 82-86 F

2. I dont find it to be uncommon for growth rates to differ between jars/bags even when knocked up at the same time. Right now I have 3 jars I knocked with B+ 2 weeks ago one is at like 50% colonization while the other two are only 25% at the most. :peace:

they are too cold, they look too wet, i doubt you will have much luck with them.
make sure to properly drain or simmer yr grain next time.
and get a tub in tub.
they are easy and effective.

forget him dude.
ure doing fine  its just gonna take a lil longer thats all...
with that in mind dunking seems like a good idea...
also u should know that once u have a fully colonised jar
u can do some tricks with it to inoculate further jars...
and i understand u have some empty ones now...
btw check out my homepage \/\/\/ where i kept a record of my colonising B+ wich i started jan 5... (95% col)

"Should I wait until the mycelium completely covers the inside of the jars before birthing them?"

yes

TIT
Tub in Tub Consisting of the bottom tub with water and a fishtankheater inside. The other tub is placed in the tub with the warm water. This way you can use it as an incubator.

Set the fishtankheater on 86F, put your jars in the other tub. Cover it, so its dark.
GO!
