Perlite is spawning

I have never seen this before, i've heard about the mycelium spawning on cardboard, etc. But on the perite in the terrarium? I have casings in there, with holes on the bottom for drainage. I'm assuming the mycelium got out through these holes, and is now spawning over the entire perlite surface! The perlite is not *soaking*, but it is good and damp. There is even a tiny amount of standing water. I was wondering if anyone else ever had this happen and if you used it to an advantage, right now, it's only a disadvantage, as it's probably sucking all my nutrients out of my casings, and i'm sure it'll get nice and contaminant ridden once it starts to die. Any input would be appreciated.

i recently cut some cakes in half, (lengthwise) and laid them
directly on the perlite. they started colonizing the perlite like
crazy so i stabbed them with a fork and put them on a small
plastic tray. when i picked them up there had to be 1/2" of
perlite stuck to them. still had fine results, but i will always
wonder what would have happened had i let them colonize
the entire terrarium. not much help i know, but thought you
might be interested.

maybe you could try an experiment see if it leads to a better flush, especially with all that extra water on tap-maybe you could leave some standing water also, so when the perlite is dryed it can wick up more water

Keep your projects off the perlite. If you want a good pinset, you need for your substrate to be losing mosture, not sucking it up from the perlite. I've seen cakes and bulks get over saturated that way, and they either perform poorly or not at all. Best to let the moisture evaporate from your substrate, then dunk between flushes.
