Flow; The Psychology of Optimal Experience Author; Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
"While forming judgement seems lightning-fast; it does not happen automatically. There is a process called attention, it is attention that selects the relevant bits of information from the potential millions of bits available. It takes attention to retrieve the appropriate references from memory, to evaluate the event, and then to choose the right thing to do"
" Despite its great powers, attention cannot step beyond the limits already described. It cannot notice or hold in focus more informations than can be processed simultaneously. Retrieving information from memory storage and bringing it into focus as awareness, comparing information, evaluating, deciding-all make demands on the mind's limited processing capability.

The people of Flow
"The traits that mark an autotelic personality are most clearly revelaed by people who seem to enjoy situations that ordinary persons would find unbearable. Lost in antartica or confined to a prison cell, some individuals succeed in transforming thier harrowing conditions into a manageable an even enjoyable struggle [game], whereas most others would succumb to the ordeal.

"Individuals who require a great deal of outside information to form representations of reality in conciousness may become dependent on the external environment for using thier minds. They would have less control over thier thoughts, which in turn would make it more difficult for them to enjoy experience. By contrast people who need only a few external clues to represent events in conciousness are more autonomous from the environment. They have a more flexible attention that allows them to restructure experience more easily, and there achieve optimal experiences more frequently."

"In the lives of many people it is possible to find a unifying purpose that justifies the things they do day in, and day out- a goal that like a magnetic field attracts thier psychic energy, a goal that all lesser goals depend. This goal will define the challenges that a person needs to face in order to transform his or her life into a flow activity [ your favorite game ] Without such a purpose, even the best-ordered conciousness lacks meaning.

I'm thinking about what to type here, and at least twice I've erased what I've written, for I wasn't flowing, and only hope that I am now. Writing requires attention, focus, but flowing is an art that lends elasticity to form. Good writing, if it were tangible, would be cohesive, yet pliable. Conversely, it is possible to assert one's attention in such a rigid way that flow must give way to style. Hemingway is said to have done it best. Style is not like a thumbprint or a hairline; style is that human quality of expression. Some call it ego. I call it a birth-right.

I've just started reading this book about dance as a form of spiritual expression...and one of the 5 basic forms of it is "flowing" which it suggests is all about connecting Awareness to Action through Attention.
"While forming judgement seems lightning-fast; it does not happen automatically. There is a process called attention, it is attention that selects the relevant bits of information from the potential millions of bits available. It takes attention to retrieve the appropriate references from memory, to evaluate the event, and then to choose the right thing to do"
...that explains it quite nicely

Flowing is what I do. I beleive it's necessary for growth. It doesn't necessarily have to involve a phyiscal flow as well, but I beleive that mind + body are most necessary for a flow.
It can be a sudden event or an all day endevour. Maybe all these little things hook up and form a chain that you can only see at the end of the journey. It's all about not fearing and living. If you don't take that last step, all your other steps might be useless. You will never know until you get there.

I love this. I've recently begun to practice trip slogans in ordinary life, like go with the flow. Everytime I start to feel stressed out, I just think, 'go with the flow' and it makes things seem less overwelming once I am "part of the event."
Thanks for sharing this.

The flow isn't something you choose to jump in from time to time. It's happening every second of every day. There is no end of the journey, there is no place to get to. Though there are ends to specefic neuroses which come about through acceptance of the flow. When you become conscious of the flow it's either go with it, or suffer, that's all there is to it. It's all about surrender.

flow is something you jump into from time to time its always there for you to find You do have to find it it doesnt always come easy nothing this special comes easy everyones flow is different while i find my flow riding my motorcycle or cultivating mushrooms you may find it fishing or playing hockey or sewing, meditating technically you can flow doing anything if you set your mind to it
the beauty of it iS once you find it, it becomes easier to get back to every time you flow you grow you become a more complex being your awareness and understanding increases the more time is spent there this flow, spills over into all other aspects of your life

There's a destination a little up the road From the habitations and the towns we know A place we saw the lights turn low With the jig-saw jazz and the get-fresh flow Pulling out jives and jamboree handouts Two turntables and a microphone Bottles and cans just clap your hands just clap your hands
