HELP needed. Casing colonizing unusually slow?
    #3706833 - 01/31/05 10:25 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hi all, i've started my first casing about three weeks ago.. however, both my casing don't seem to be colonizing. The top, visible layer has only minimal signs of mycelium.

Casing was done my breaking up completely colonised brown rice flour cakes into small pieces and then topped with a layer of 60% vercumilite and 40% peat moss (powdered lime added to regulate pH). There was also a hydrated layer of vercumilite at the bottom.
Wrapped the whole casing with GladWrap and then kept them somewhere dark.

After about 3 days after casing, there was minimal mycelium popping out on the top layer but growth seemed to have slowed to almost nothing. About 3 weeks later and 3 days ago, i figured they would be better off in a fruiting chamber with higher humidity so i moved them there. (Read that casings can be put into fruiting chamber the moment mycelium pops up to the surface)

Is this unusually SLOW colonizing? I hardly see mycelium on the surface of my casings (even if there is, they don't seem fluffy but are rather ropy) and it has already been about three weeks or so...

Have i done something wrong? Is there anything i can do to help?

Also, i have been misting the casing about once every 5 days, they seem to dry out quick even when wrapped up in GladWrap.

I am new to mushroom cultivation, but I've been told to mist lightly up to four times per day. This also increases gas exchange.

Are you fanning?
