i have a couple 1 pt jars that are ready for birth -- they've taken a while to colonize and I think the cakes have become kind of dry. I've birthed them like this before and it takes them a long time to colonize a casing layer... would a dunking technique help {i had never heard of them until seeing dunking mentioned in a couple posts}, and where can I find one? thx much. -protocoldroid

The casing will provide any moisture they need. Dunking would be redundant.

As I understand it instead of birthing the cake you fill up the jar with sterile water and let the cake sit totally submerged for no less than 24 hours but no more than 48 hours. When you finally take it out be sure to dry the exterior of the cake with a paper towel to get any leftover water droplets off. This should greatly rehydrate your cake and improve your flush.

Yeah, I agree with Puscle... You should only dunk for 12 hours, 24 at most...

kewl, thank you very much for an url. alright, if I dunk them can I still crumble the cakes in a glovebox and case them, or... should I leave them intact after? or should I not dunk them unless they are crispity-crunchity-dry, they don't seem bone dry, just a bit more shrunken then I've noticed in 1/2 pt. jars... thx. -protocoldroid

Don't bother with the dunk. Case them ala Hongus` Casing Tek for Dummies, available at same URL. P.S., You don't need a glovebox for casing.

I read the dunk tek a long time ago but I am 100% sure it said no less than 24 hours but no more than 48 hours. Has it changed since then?
