Echinacea Thread
    #3705255 - 01/31/05 01:45 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I did a search in here and only 3 things came up....2 of which are the same thread.....

Personally i think it would be good to have some discussion here about it.

so i'll start cause i know shit all about how it works.

So what all does it do? i have read a bit about it feeds somthing in your immune system, and have read a lot about how it shortens things like colds and flu's.

is it a defense against virus, bacteria, fungus what? jsut an immune system builder? how exactly does it build the immune system? what effects doe sit do to it, and at what strenths.

Just read this while flipping through a catalogue.

"Highly regarded blood purifier used in the treatment of diseases caused by impurities. Said to increase bodily resistance to infection by strengthening the immune system."

There is evidence that echinacea, or more specifically substances derived from it, have significant immune stimulating activity.

Reports indicate that the immune stimulating properties is due to a polysaccharide, which are actively involved in the destruction of bacteria, viruses, other infection agents, and cancer cells.

There may be other substances in echinacea besides the polysaccharides that have immune-enhancing effects. Recently some smaller molecules have been isolated that may fit this category, but research must continue in this area.

Note that the immune stimulating effects discussed above were obtained using extracts of echinacea, not from use of the herb itself.

I heard it was an anti-biotic. I have an aunt who's a naturalist who swears by it for colds. Personally it does wonders for curing up a nasty cold or flu. Some friends have claimed it's very bad for you, then again those are the same friends that tell me "drugs are bad" and that "second hand smoke is the world's biggest threat" so I wouldn't take their word on drug oriented information.

I planted 8 echinacea plants this past spring and they all grew very well...

From what I hear, the root is the part you are supposed to use. You are supposed to harvest the roots during the plants 3rd year, or cycle, for maximum viability..

As far as I know, the root is the active ingredient and any echinacea pills you buy are grounded root?

I am curious as to information and uses this plant can offer .

any other tidbits people can offer will be appreciated. From what I hear, the plants will come back ever year as an annual? My 8 plants got pretty big, but they died come winter.. I was under the impression the root system survives and comes back each year

"The German government has approved Echinacea pallida root and Echinacea purpurea leaf for use against colds, flu, and chronic respiratory or urinary infections. "

Taken from http://www.aidsinfonet.org/articles.php?articleID=726&newLang=en

It is also said that people with HIV use it to raise white blood cells and combat HIV by strengthening the immune system.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
There are no known side effects from internal or external use of echinacea. The warnings about negative effects of echinacea use in people with immune disorders are based on laboratory studies. There are no human studies that document these side effects.

Also from the link above.

But this says people with AIDS shouldn't take it?
http://www.gettingwell.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/herbaldrugs/100980.shtml

and this link http://www.globalherbalsupplies.com/herb_information/echinacea.htm says its used to treat syphilis.

heres a list of chemicals in echinacea.
Contains:

alkamides
betain
caryophylene
copper
esquiterpenes
essential oil
fatty acids
flavonoids
glycoproteins
glycosides
iron
polyacetylenes
polysaccharides - the important components stimulating the immune system are the large polysaccharides, which contribute to the herb's immune empowering effects and increases T-cell production and other natural killer cell activity. These include:
caffeic acid glycoside Echinacoside
fat-soluble alkylamides
inulin
protein
tannins
vitamins A, C, E
volatile oils

Hope some of this information helps you at all.

awsome stuff

i jsut bought a book on teh subject (its pretty shitty...but lays out the basics).

"...One study showed that both injected and oral administration of echinacea caused an increase in phagocytosis....Phagocytosis is teh swallowing of foreign bodies by white blood cells.  In this study, phagocytosis increased while echinacea was administered and returned to normal within a few days after echinacea was stopped.

Animal and test tube studies have also found evidence that echinacea increases white blood cell activity.  Unfortunatly, and increase in measured levels of phagocytosis may or may not translate into any meaningfull effect on immunity as a whole.

In this case, the bottom line is fewer infections."

from "The Natural Pharmacist"  Everything you need to know about Echinacea and Immunity......www.tnp.com

not great books in my opinion.  i dont liek tehir lay out, but their info is interesting.

I've seen it listed as Perennial,

Growing Echinacea

some good info there.

Research is being done to determine productivity of two, three, or four-year old plants, and the best time for harvest.

good link there..
This quote from the guide makes me think the roots would survive and a new plant would grow in the spring.. which would be really good, even though it dropped tons of seeds..

Also- I have seen echinacea that is around at least 8 years old I would assume.. 5' tall with huge coneflowers..
This plant is extra nice because a single flower stays in bloom for weeks almost and slowly turns to seed.
It is easy to grow and thrived here in the southeast US.. I recommend it for all gardeners.

I would imagine the benefit of having your white blood cells eliminate things that are not supposed to be there faster would be good.. But just how fast does this happen? Is it enough to want grow it and use it daily to prolong your health, if so- what other herbs should the all encompassing human use to aid in many things in a wide category of medical areas?

in that book i just started reading t sounds like it is farily instantaneous (within a day or two) for effects to happen. and teh same goes for the effects to go away.

sounds liek if your in a colder climate liek myself, treating them like we do begonias would be wise. we cut them when they start to die down and put them in teh garage over winter (dark and cool).
