Thought I would share about my PMP
    #3705134 - 01/31/05 01:22 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I had a problem with my Poor man's pod. My BRF cakes kept growing myc, but would not pin. Originally i had built a chamber with a spray shield. then i saw a PMP and didnt want to be a chump, so i built one. I used perlite and it was kind of fine. the bubble wands hooked up to a 60 gal pump.(adjustable from 30-60, but set on 60)My hygrometer said 96-98% all the time. i still fanned and stuff just because i wanted to. no fruit for two weeks! i took two of my initial four and put in my original spray shield setup. sprayed 2-3 times each day for 2 days. BAM MUSHIES! moved all four to the spray shield setup and i ordered some geolite off the internet. cost me 15 bucks for 15 liters. i will put geolite in my PMP later and see if it makes a diffence on the next batch.(ive got more incubating in jars) all responses to this post are welcome.

that's really strange

"I like cigarettes, Miss Taggart. I like to think of fire held in a man's hand. Fire, a dangerous force, tamed at his fingertips. I often wonder about the hours when a man sits alone, watching the smoke of a cigarette, thinking. I wonder what great things have come alive from such hours. When a man thinks, there is a spot of fire alive in his mind---and it is proper that he should have the burning point of a cigarette as his one expression."

perhaps its a matter of temperature.
shrooms need something to tell it when to fruit and
for this it uses light, co2 levels and temperature.
ill assume u have light and from ure post we can assume co2 isnt an issue...
so that leaves temp.
also did u dunk or cold shock? and what strain are u growing?
some strains are harder to fruit then others and there are those that kinda need to be coldshocked to make them fruit...

i coldshocked and dunked them twice. second time was two weeks after first. temp was at 75 for two weeks. i varied it to see if it made a difference. still there was nothing

They could have been too wet...

When you switched to hand drying, you actually lowered teh humidity enough so that the moisture in the tank was not from the perlite... rather it was evaporating off the cake.

You don't just get mushrooms in one day after setting them in the fruiting chamber... so the chances that the spraying and seporator are the main cause of the grow are slim.

However, this may be an indicator that you should use 85%-90% humidity instead. Since you said it was closer to 95%-98% before.

Good observation, even more bennificial to know... few people ever think of there being too much humidity! (Basically, it was as if your cakes were under water! They may not have drained enough after cold shock-dunk-roll.)

To decrease humidity, you simply have to have less surface area for the perlite, or increase the amount of fresh/dry room air. That could also have been your other problem, there may have still been too much CO2. (I am not sure how big of a pump you are using.)

What is a 30 gallon / 60 gallon pump?

You need to know the CC per hour...
60 US gallons = 227,124.708 cc
I doubt that your pump pushes out 60 gallons an hour???
That would replace the air in that tank about 1000 times a day!

They usually rate pumps based off of "Items Per Pump" or cc
EG, my pump is a 6 watt pump that can deliver 9500 cc, thus it is called the "ProFile 9500". It is variable, delivering 3000 - 9500 cc per minute or 2.50963449 gallons per minute or 9.5 liters per minute.

(Whoa... 2.51 GPM = 150.58 GPH = 3613.87 GPD)
 This powers eight air stones in eight fruiting chambers...
Each chamber is about 20 gallons worth of space.
EG, each gets about 0.32 GPM = 18.82 GPH = 451.73 GPD = 22.4 times per day that the air is replaced. (Once would be enough!)
(I can easily hook up 32 - 20 gallon tanks to this setup.)

32 20g tanks would translate into 0.7 times a day that thier air would be replaced. About 14 of the 20 gallons would be fresh every day.

When he was saying 60gal, I'm sure that he was referring to the tank size it was rated for. Deeper tanks need more cc/min to get the air to the wand.

exactly.
and the cakes are all doing so frickin wonderful in the sprayshield setup. i will keep you all posted on how the geolite works in my PMP. i suspect the perlite compacted too hard and wouldnt let the wands produce a whole lot of bubbles. the rh in my sprayshield setup is always 98%. same temps. around 70-75 F.

You need to remove all dust from perlite.Wickers better IMO.Just don't breath the dust.

GL. Perlite always fucked up my bubble wands. I think it was the dust/ compacting like you said. I'm too lazy to drive far enough to go to my local hydro store so I went with the lava rocks from my local home depot. So far so good. The only drawback is the weight of the lava rocks over geolite/leca, I don't pick up and move my PMP so I really could care less.

the mycelium was having all kinds of fun in my PMP though. lol. it grew thicker and it was rooting about 1 inch into the perlite. crazy stuff. now i got shrooms popping outta the bottom of my cakes. they sit on a rust proof grate and they are popping right through it.

well i switched to geolite today and the RH on my two hygrometers read 98%. same as before, however the sweat on the walls is noticeably heavier and there is more bubbling in the pod. ill keep you all posted on the cakes. i think perlite is a bad substitute for geolite. unless you have really big pieces of perlite. we will see!
