About to start to grow.
    #3704058 - 01/30/05 09:51 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Well, my friend and I are taking the necessary steps to begin growing.

Tonight we have ordered jars, vermiculite, and spores/syringe.  We have all the other necessary products.

As for the terrarium, how well does the "Poor man's Terrarium" http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/3372/pag/4  end up working?

It seems like it would work, with the only downfall being that you'd have to realease the co2 from them a few times a day, but we are commited to it.  And, how much, if any light is required for this method?

We've read a bunch about it already, but do any of you experienced growers have any suggestions or recomendations?

Thanks.

Welcome

Poor man's pod works good, but I'd suggest casing your cakes instead of fruiting them whole-you can expect much better results, and casing is very easy to do. 12 hours of light to initiate pinning is recommended.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply.

What exactly do you mean by "casing" as opposed to fruiting them whole?

Yes i've seen that.

I just have a concern/question.

If I use the casing method, after it starts poking out above the top layer of Vermiculite, do i just leave it there? Or do i have to transfer it anywhere, cover it, or what?

You want to patch it until its about even then let it go.

What he means by patching is that you put some excess casing material over the mycelium thats popping through.

Casing is a bit more difficult than growing the cakes by PF-Tek, it shouldn't be reccomended to someone's first-ever grow. It does have better yeild per investment, but a higher rate of failure for newbies (not for experienced growers).

So for my first time growing, I should not use the casing method since it is more prone to failure?

I still have plenty of time to figure it out i suppose.

timing is critcal with casing, you must initiate pinning before the myc fully colonizes the casing

this way is the easiest way to understand it. Since this is your first time you are more prone to getting contams, so if you have cakes, and one of them gets contaminated. You just throw the contam'd cake out, and it doesn't effect the other ones. However if you were doing casings, and the contam'd cake was put into the case, then it will contam the rest of the case. How ever many cakes that will be.

"I like cigarettes, Miss Taggart. I like to think of fire held in a man's hand. Fire, a dangerous force, tamed at his fingertips. I often wonder about the hours when a man sits alone, watching the smoke of a cigarette, thinking. I wonder what great things have come alive from such hours. When a man thinks, there is a spot of fire alive in his mind---and it is proper that he should have the burning point of a cigarette as his one expression."

Alright, thanks for the insight everybody. I reckon we will just use the poor man's terrarium when the time comes.
