I need a hand
    #3702759 - 01/30/05 05:22 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

My computer did something weird the other day. It kinda froze a minute then popped back on with the colors all messed up. Now all my colors are in shades of grey and red. Any one have a clue wtf is going on? I dont.

How old is your video card? Sounds like a video card issue.

The card is as old as the computer. Maybe 6 or 7.

You can get a nice video card at Best Buy for under $100 bucks that should fill your needs. They are selling a GeForce MX 4000 128MB DDR for $79.99 right now. I don't know what your budget is, but you can't go wrong with this card.

Before you go doing that, take the card out and put it back in again.

Maybe clean the contacts with some sort of alcohol type soln, if it has a fan clean all the fluff out of that etc. Reinstall the drivers. Also, boot up in safe mode see if its the same.

I once dropped an entire glass of ouzo, and it bounced off the wall and went completely inside the computer which the side was open. while it was switched on. It went crazy, but after I took everything out, cleaned it and dryed it off.. everythings still working now.

Start with safe mode and drivers.

As to finding it.. well, wherever the cable from the monitor goes into the back of the PC, thats where the card is. You can tell it will be a large card and you can match up the socket to the monitor plug in bit when you have it open. Be gentle with it.

Switch the wall socket off, but leave it plugged in as well while you do these things.

Also could be a bad monitor cable. Ive had one with a pan connection that made everything a tint of purple.

Try Degaussing it. Whenever the colours on my monitor do something strange I click the degauess button and it fixes it.

As mentoned before it could be the Video Card.. however it could also be the monitor. if it is the monitor then im afraid the solution is much more expensive, buy a new monitor. The best way to find out is to test out a diff monitir on your computer. On the video card end, yes look ad see where the cord plugs in. If it looks like a seperate chip sticking out of the mother board at a right angle then try (turning off your computer first and unplugging the monitor cable) gently removing the card using a back and forth rocking motion. BE CAREFUL some expansion slots have a sliding clasp to hold the card in... it would suck to break this off. Blow in the slot and wipe down the brass looking contacts. It may require more force to get it back in (those damn expansion slots are tricky) make sure it is flushly seated and plug everything back up and try turning on your computer again. If the monitor cable leads to what looks like a small connector soldered to the large circuit board (the motherboard) then you haev onboard video and may be in a shit load more trouble. this may mean that your motherboard is on its way to a slow frustrating and painful death, causing many problems along the way.

Are you running windows?

If so try going into control panel > system > hardware > device manager > and click on the + next to display adaptors which will bring your video card up.

Is there an exclamation mark next to it? Double click on the card and it should tell you if the device is working properly.
