An Ego Death for a Spiritual Awkaing
    #3700643 -

Must an ego die, or one's perception of life as they were born into, be changed for enlightenment? Psychedelics often produce and "ego death" that result in permanent changes in one's outlook and behavior in life...

What do you think?

I want to live in Northern Exposure. Ed Chigliak would be my pal.

Before going on... it's sometimes a little tricky discussing the definition of EGO.

Sclorch: Whatever happened to Nomad?
Swami: He moved on.  :tongue2:

Thats a very good question. According to Buddhism, your perceptions and your conscious mind( ego) are limited and this limitation causes you to suffer. The Buddha said that the one great cause of our human suffering was our fucked up perception. We percieve ourselves and others as individuals, seperate from eachother in every way. Truly, on some level we are not seperate beings at all but all are one in the same. Building up this illusory sense of "I" and "me" we go about attaching outselves to some particular identity whether it be our sex, race, religion, gender, or even our spiritual practice. no aspect of your life is far from your own ego's reaches.just think about how many things you do to uphold and satisfy your sense of self. However the ego is not in any sense REAL. Think about it. are you really any one thing that you classify yourself as. Sure i am a psychonaut and a philosipher, but thats not the dynamics of me.Im many other things too, and i am different things at different times. But i am never constantly just one aspect of myself therefore i am constantly changing. Descartes once looked inside himself, trying to find the origin of his own thoughts? where did they come from? was he really the thinker, or were they just thoughts? as hard as he tried he could not find that solid center of mind, or being, where the thoughts arose(which is where the statement " i think therefore i am" came from).Thats because there isnt one. so Yes, you must get rid of your illusory perceptions and Ego to attain full enlightenment.

How do one get everything, to lose it, and get on with gaining anything?
is there not, possibly a thing to consider, having everything, to lose in the first place?
just fishing..
