Substrate TOO loose?
    #3701615 - 01/30/05 10:17 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Is it possible that you put the substrate too loose in the jar?

If you have big air pockets everywhere it's probably too loose. Otherwise, a bit loose is much better then packed too tight for colonization reasons.

Good luck

I have a question about this , i know it will colonize faster which is better vs. contams. But if you have it tightly packed it would be slower but wouldnt there be more minerals , in that case giving you more flushes?

It's better to have them too loose than too tight. In tightly packed jars, it can take a VERY long time for the cake to colonize all the way through. What usually ends up happening is that the myc will colonize the outside of the cake (near the glass) fairly quickly but it takes a very long time for it to "push" it's way through to the center of the substrate.

According to some cake masters who can pull 14 grams off a single cake flush packing it loose is a big key...along with water content. Dont know myself but yanno.

I agree with scat....tighter wouldnt mean more minerals....itd mean jus more sub per sq. inch....there'd be more minerals...but the myc. wouldn't be as strong....itd be wasting all of its time/energy trying to colonize a brick lol

Looser is better. A little on the dry side helps also.
