Does Love Exist?
    #3698970 - 01/29/05 03:50 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

PhanTomCat asks: "You can't "see" love, but can you honestly deny that it exists....?"

I see it only as a human idea or a concept with no substance.

Love is a word for a certain realtionship with something or a certain sensation, so it does exist.
Does "looking" or "concern" or "pain" exist? They are abstract but they do exist as concepts.

Is there an emotion, or set of emotions that humans refer to as love? Yes.

Is it some magical force that ties us together and is prevelant throughout the universe? Shut up, hippy.

I kid. But no, probably not.

love

This word seems to require explanation only in the case of its use by our Lord
in his interview with "Simon, the son of Jonas," after his resurrection (John
21:16, 17). When our Lord says, "Lovest thou me?" he uses the Greek word
_agapas_; and when Simon answers, he uses the Greek word _philo_, i.e., "I
love." This is the usage in the first and second questions put by our Lord; but
in the third our Lord uses Simon's word. The distinction between these two Greek
words is thus fitly described by Trench:, "_Agapan_ has more of judgment and
deliberate choice; _philein_ has more of attachment and peculiar personal
affection. Thus the 'Lovest thou' (Gr. agapas) on the lips of the Lord seems to
Peter at this moment too cold a word, as though his Lord were keeping him at a
distance, or at least not inviting him to draw near, as in the passionate
yearning of his heart he desired now to do. Therefore he puts by the word and
substitutes his own stronger 'I love' (Gr. philo) in its room. A second time he
does the same. And now he has conquered; for when the Lord demands a third time
whether he loves him, he does it in the word which alone will satisfy Peter
('Lovest thou,' Gr. phileis), which alone claims from him that personal
attachment and affection with which indeed he knows that his heart is full." In
1 Cor. 13 the apostle sets forth the excellency of love, as the word "charity"
there is rendered in the Revised Version.

What's your point? Does the dictionary say that the emotion known as love (as the person didn't mean "make love," or other euphemisms for sex) is not a "human idea or a concept with no substance?"

love exists, but only by willpower and self-sacrifice.

despite what many 70's R&B acts would have people believe, real love is not a walk in the park. Real love can bring darkness the likes of which many people are incapable of dealing with.

so, to answer your question, yes I do believe in love, but on the other hand, hippies can cram that "love is all you need" crap up their asses. Their idea of what love should be is a bigoted, superficial escapist fantasy.

well, some people are better alchemists than others.

I know many people who the hippie lifestyle has spit up and chewed out, leaving them bitter and depressed in their middle age.

Really I think that hippy 'faith in love' is just naive and narrow-minded. Love isnt all that. It has its ups and downs just like anything else. It can make life good and it can make life suck. Its not like 'pure light' or anything. Its just something, you know like it has two sides just like anything else. To see love as nothing but positive is naive and narrow-minded, IMO.

basically what I'm saying is that if I love somebody, I'll take bullets for them, but that doesn't mean the bullets won't hurt.

love hurts. Its not all fun and games.

I mean, isnt that the difference between a fair weather friend and a true friend? A true friend will stick by you even when it isnt pleasant for them to do so. That's love. I dont really have respect for love that hasnt been tested by hardship. I mean, its easy to love someone when they are rich and healthy. Try loving someone when they are poor and dying.
