A FOAF's set-up.. will it work?

So, a FOAF was discussing his planned set-up for cultivation. Basically, he would be following the Shroomgod straw tek with the notable exception of a sunbeam ultrasonic cool mist humidifier being used in place of the kaz cool mist humidifier and grated (sterilized, but not colonized) PF tek cakes being used in place of peat moss/vermiculite/lime flour casing mix.
He then wanted to hook up a 5 foot length of capped PVC pipe to the mist output on the top of the humidifier. Holes would be drilled in the sides of the PVC pipe and hoses run from those holes to the rubbermaid container(s). On the inside wall of the rubbermaid container(s), a cup would be taped underneath the hole to catch excess moisture that may drip from the hose.
His main concern with this setup is that he cannot afford a timer and fears that leaving the humidifier on the entire time he's away will create excess moisture, as well as a lack of gas exchange.
Are his fears unfounded, or will he have to sell his body to matronly women in order to be able to afford this timer?
Also, is there anything he's missing?

haha dude a timer is like 5 bucks at wallmart. if you can't afford that find something in your house to pawn to get 5 bucks. simple.

Yes your fears are correct...you WILL need a timer for that ultrasonic (though you probably dont need the humidifiers..at least the ultra...anyways..but thats your choice...will probably give you better results..little more work)...they are only a few bucks though...even the 15 minute increment one will work...15 minutes every 2 hours or so (to start but results WILL vary..vary to compensate). I got a few of those timers..2 for 7 bucks.

FOAF = Four Overly Aggressive Females
or, Friend Of A Friend
what timers would you suggest? the only ones the FOAF has seen that were affordable weren't suitable... 2 on/2 off or ones that the timing cycle was 30 mins. I'm guessing he's going to want the 15 min interval ones, or something where you can adjust the time the humidifier is left on.

again you can't under any circumstances use pf mix for a casing layer, it will contam 100%, go with 60/40 coir/verm
and use the timer for times when your friend wont be there, for instance if your foaf is always home at 9am and 12pm, then he can manually turn it on and off, this way the 2 on/off settings can be used when the foaf isn't around

Look around...home depot, walmart, kmart, lowes. Don't be lazy, be creative. The timers are out there and cheep. I've found them at the first two mentioned..never looked at the others.
jc_illenium, first off your meter I'm sure is fucked up if it doesnt get up. Second off, are you talking about an ULTRASONIC or a COOL MIST. Cool mists run 24/7 and dont raise humidity much...they are for air exchange. Ultrasonics put out visable solid mist and if you run them in just about any chamber 24/7 you will have a fog that you can't see through.

it keeps the greenhouse at a nice and steady 72/73 degrees, but only gets about 70 to 85% humidity. and the fog like you said is pretty heavy, i had to line the floor with plastic to catch all the excess moisture. will this work out ok? do you have any suggestions?

You should not have a fog in there...and your meter is crap, you may as well remove it if it doesnt go higher then 85% sitting in fog.

Probes to sensor humidity are very hard to find...I havnt seen anything that does it yet but if its there its probably expensive..
