Spore Print Chart/ Find your Genus
    #3696195 - 01/29/05 02:30 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I created a spore print chart and added it to my website(Mycosis).  I aimed for an easy to use chart to help people determine the genus of a mushroom.  I hope you find this helpful and informative.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks xlcy,  It took a few days to htmlize it the way i wanted it, i know that some genuses(genii?) probably need to be added, so i'm quite open to suggestion/additions.  Thanks again

The only thing I can think of to add would be to put the individual color on each species, because theres some catergories that are too wide.

Plural of genus: genera.

Very good. It's a good start, but there are a few small errors.

The most obvious are a few typos (inevitable). The ones I see with a quick glance are:

Catathelsama (Catathelasma)
Myxomphallia (Myxomphalia)
Omphalatus (Omphalotus)
Resupinatas (Resupinatus)
Marasmiellas (Marasmiellus)
Storbilurus (Strobilurus)

Some of the genera listed are no longer used as described. For example:

Armillaria now includes only the Honey Mushrooms (which you included under Armillariella). The other species were mostly moved into Tricholoma. As a result, I don't think Armillariella is not being used for anything now. Tom Volk is one of the mycologists who did the work on that. A Google search for Volk and Armillaria will get you plenty of info.

I'm not sure about species worldwide, but the North American species that were in Oudemansiella are now in the genus Xerula.

Simlarly, the species formerly in Naematoloma are now in Hypholoma.

I'd guess you got most of the data from David Arora's book. It's a great book, but it's now almost 20 years old and getting slowly out of date. For all of us non-professionals it's fairly tough to get the info about what's going on with this genus or that species.

Here are links to a couple articles that describe some of this fun:
http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/may2004.html
http://www.bluewillowpages.com/mushroomexpert/kuo_05.html

Overall, I applaud your efforts. At a minimum you have learned a great deal about identifying mushrooms to genus, and that's the part that's most important.

Happy mushrooming!

Very nice man. You know what some of us shroomerites need. A pronunciation guide. I don't know how to pronounce most of the genus names and can only pronounce one species and its an active. And I hear people say that different all the time! I have yet to find something on the matter. If anybody knows where it is let me know.

Format is good
Info is good
Colors are cool too.that pretty much goes with format...

There are some additions that could be made. Maybe a region of where the fungus grows some pictures of the ones you can get pictures for.
That would make an awesome main page to get in to more detail about the genus and/or species.

Great contribution!

I found some pronunciation guides but I still want to know how to say a bunch that wernt anywhere that I could find.
Like copelandia and a few others. That is the one that has been bugging me.

Everyone here calls copelandia fungi "deathcaps".  :whatever:

I dont even say anything because if you try to educate anyone about pretty much anything it goes in one ear and out the other. They just keep going by myths and what they hear from other people that dont know shit. Especially when it comes down to fungus.

Good table coding work, I do some of that myself.
What did you use as a source of info?

ShroomieOfDoomie - Now that i got a base page to work with, narrowing the color category is a great idea

Gumby - Thanks for the pluralization

ToxicMan- Thanks for the corrections and the great information, a ton of great research starting points.  Will start implementing corrections/researching

jtseaweed - I leave a pronunciation guide for a later date(hands still hurt from coding); Pics would be nice but there are variations even within a genus so a Representative shroom, that encapsulates the definition of the genus, would have to chosen. I Like the main page idea

eris - Thank god for CSS!  There was a few sources, but my main source was the Audubon field guide, it also has a spore print guide in the back, but i don't like their format, wasn't easy to use

Everyone else- thanks for the support!  This really is becoming a shroomery group effort, already got lots of great ideas/refinements/info.  As ToxicMan said, it's a good start, that can only be improved.

That's a good idea, needs work first.  I will definately PDF it when the time is right, i'll also include it in the first issue of Mycosis.  Thanks for the idea!

I was thinking about that, and since someone else would like to see it, it shall be. I need spore print pics, so here's a call to the community, post your spore print pics(credit will be given), any color, and the best ones(based on clarity and form) will be added.  This will help make the chart more complete.  Thanks for your input!
