after a first flush some pf cakes seemed really dry. caasing them with bottom and top layers of verm did little, and they just sit there really hard and blue. should they be soaked in their jars with water for a day, or would that be a bad idea? anyone have a better idea?

i'm fairly new to growing, but in my limited experience I have have found dunking to be extremely effective. I dunked some cakes and not others and I found that every time the dunked cakes produced better and looked healthier. I dunk mine about 12 hours when they feel light and dry and begin looking blue. I wouldn't even consider not dunking my cakes between flushes now.
Also, if you don't want to dunk you can try adding water to your double-end casing daily to keep it moist (not sure if you did this).
As a final cake rehydration tek you should check out PF's inner reservoir tek if you haven't already (he just added some great new pics last week).

I put my cakes individually in freezer bags filled with water for 15-20 hours. Works great.

has anyone tried the inner res tek?
what im wondering is how many cc's of water and how often?
also, how does it compare to dunking?
btw, how long should i expect to wait on the pins of the next flush to form after dunking?

most of my cakes had pins within a week after dunking...except the first time I dunked and those cakes took almost two weeks to pin (not sure why)
Also - I think the inner reservoir tek looks like it may be better than just dunking alone. My dunked cakes produced decently...2nd flush had around 35g wet per cake, but the cakes definitely blued while producing. PF has those pics with a snow white cake absolutely exploding with shrooms. re. how much water: the PF site says add 2 - 5 cc water per day
It's just like any tek though...you won't know until you try it..and I've seen many great pictures...and most were from experienced growers. Of course PF is going to get great results, he wrote the book...
I'm definitely going to try innner reservoir on my next batch though

Dunking an inner-reservoir cake should only be a last resort, if the cake is really dry. But it shouldn't be, if it has an inner-reservoir. You will drown your cakes and kill them if you do this.
